A message from the Post Commander:
 Comrades,

Please be reminded of our next monthly VFW Post 983 meeting Tuesday, June 2, at 3128 La Mancha Way, Henderson. This is my HOA clubhouse.

DIRECTIONS: Come to the Warm Springs gate (just off Green Valley Pkwy), contact me for the gate code. GPS may bring you to the Green Valley gate, but there is no keypad. If you find yourself there, turn around, go north on Green Valley Parkway, turn right on Warm Springs, and take your first right to the gate.

PARKING: Please park facing the tennis courts next to the clubhouse. If all the spaces are full, park along the curb nearest the clubhouse door.

Among the agenda items will be the following. Items 3 and 4 are from District 5 Adjutant Don Pettyjohn:

Department (State) Convention Flag Walk - we will not be taking part. I''ll read the relevant emails at our meeting.
Review - (1) Poppy Drive at Von's Anthem, and (2)Palm Mortuary Memorial Ceremony and Veterans Resource Fair. I'm claiming our participation in this second event as our Day of Service (see next item).

What an extraordinary Memorial Day weekend Post 983 had, triumphantly raising over $1121 for the National Home through generous Poppy Donations at the Vons on Horizon Ridge in Henderson, Nevada! We're deeply grateful to Vons and their exceptional management team for this incredible opportunity, and we also appreciate the wonderful people we had the privilege of meeting and interacting with over the two-day event.

Special message from the post, senior vice commander:

Good Afternoon everyone,

We finally received clearance to conduct a poppy drive at the Vons located at the intersection of Horizon Parkway and Horizon on Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24. The drive will be open for about 5 hours each day from 1100 to 1600. Eric Bradshaw and I will set up and close the project each day. What I’m hoping is that we get at least 2 members to man the drive for 2 1/2 hours each day. This particular Vons is perfect. We are shaded all day and based on last year the customers there are very generous.

PLEASE PLEASE let me know ASAP whether you are available to be there. If you can help let me know the day or better yet both days and the amount of time you can be there. I will create a schedule and send it out to all volunteers with instructions about how to be conduct the drive. Unlike last year there will be enough seats for all volunteers. That was my screw-up.

At MISSION BBQ, we believe every day is Armed Forces Day—but once a year, we dedicate an entire week to honoring the incredible men and women who serve and have served our country.

We’re proud to invite you to join us for Armed Forces Week, happening May 11th–May 16th at our Henderson location:

Throughout the week, we’ll be recognizing each branch of our military with Military Appreciation Days, and as always, it’s our honor to serve a FREE sandwich to all Active Duty Military and Veterans as a small thank-you for your service:

Wednesday, 5/13 – Navy
Thursday, 5/14 – Air Force & Space Force
Friday, 5/15 – Coast Guard
Then on Saturday, May 16th, we invite all Active Duty Military and Veterans to join us for a very special event:

🇺🇸 “Lunch with the Heroes”
🕚 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
🎤 Live National Anthem at Noon

It’s always an incredibly meaningful moment as we come together to recognize and celebrate those who have served. We would be honored to have you there.

I’ve attached our flyer with all the details, and I would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word—whether that’s displaying it, forwarding it to your network, or sharing it on social media. The more people we reach, the more heroes we can honor.

Also, I’m currently looking for:

A military vocalist to perform the National Anthem live in uniform on Saturday
A Color Guard group to participate in the ceremony

 Comrades,

Somehow we have fallen behind by a month in electing officers for new terms. Dave Murtaugh and Eric Bradshaw noticed I had not mentioned it in my meeting reminder email. We definitely must take care of this oversight on Tuesday. Please think about whether you are prepared to nominate one of our members for an officer's position, or are prepared to be nominated for a position yourself. There is nothing wrong with preparing your nomination in advance.

Please read the following invitation from Mission BBQ.

Hello my friends,
Just a quick reminder that this Sunday, March 29th, we will be honoring our Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans at MISSION BBQ Henderson.

This day holds special meaning for us, and we would truly appreciate your help in spreading the word one more time. I’ve attached the flyer—if you’re willing, please feel free to share it, post it, or pass it along to any veterans, active duty, first responders, or anyone in your network who would want to help us recognize these heroes.

This Sunday, March 29th, we are honored to welcome all Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans for a FREE sandwich, served with our heartfelt gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

If you are a Vietnam-era veteran, it would mean so much to us to thank you in person.

I was looking at the wrong month on the calendar when I mentioned the Mission BBQ lunch. It's at 1:00 PM on April 7, the first Tuesday and our regular meeting date, not tomorrow, March 3. Our business meeting will begin right after lunch. Please send me your lunch reservations by April 3.
