Please join the Community Meeting on Tuesday, August 18 to learn about major concerns with the Sheep Creek Mine Exploration Plan AND to voice your own concerns with this headwaters mine proposal.

We are grateful to the Bitterroot National Forest for offering a 30-day public comment period, opening August 14.

🟢 COMMUNITY MEETING 8/18🟢: After a panel presentation highlighting deficiencies in the Exploration Proposal, you can submit your public comment.

🟢 Speakers include Dr. Phil Ramsey, Ravalli County Commissioners, the Bitterroot Water Partnership, and others.

🟢 Your voice matters - and your presence does too. Your participation in the Public Meeting will help show our representatives and US Critical Materials where we stand on this issue.

🟠 The Exploration Plan is currently being reviewed under a 'Categorical Exclusion', the lowest level of review available. We urge the Forest Service to recognize the extraordinary circumstances that warrant this Plan be reviewed with a complete Environmental Assessment.

😱😱😱 Wetland recovery up at Tolan Creek is speeding along! In just one year, 40 of these 'beaver dam analogues' have slowed water run off, recharged groundwater, and trapped sediment to create cool, healthy stream conditions from the headwaters down through the East Fork of the Bitterroot River.

👏Thank you for rebuilding this critical natural water storage! 👏
In a future with less reliable snowpack, restoration IS water storage.

🦫 2025 - Though water has already pooled behind this dam, you can see to the bottom of the entrenched stream bed, where fine sediment and mud that suffocates aquatic habitat coats the floor.

🦫2026 - See how much sand and debris this dam captured in just one year? The bottom of the stream bed as been raised over a foot! Without capture, this muddy sediment pollution would have tracked across miles of stream habitat.

Slow water soaks into the ground, where it is cooled, and slowly released to the River, wildlife, and working lands across our hot, dry summer.

Often, recovery of a degraded habitat can take years. Sometimes - it feels like it's happening right in front of your eyes!

Hey, 👋 wanted to make sure you knew yard signs are back in stock. Order yours and pick up in the Bitterroot Water Partnership office (Hamilton) office ASAP! 🌊

Signs come in XXL (shown here) and Normal size.

🟠 The proposed Sheep Creek Mine isn’t just located near the Bitterroot River - It would sit directly in the headwaters of the West Fork, where the River begins. This is the worst possible location for this mine.

🟠 The West Fork is a top-priority for protection. It delivers clean, cold water and sustains Painted Rocks Reservoir, which stores over 10 billion gallons of water vital for working lands and maintaining stream flow that keep fish and wildlife thriving.

🟠 What happens at Sheep Creek Mine will not stay there. Any contamination will move downstream. Once degraded by mining, these waters and habitats could never be fully restored — no matter the cleanup funds promised.
