Hello, Post 47 is proud to announce our 2025 U.S.Constitution Essay Award winners!

Thank you,

Nancy Dezell

2nd Vice Commander, Chaplain, Essay Contest Coordinator

American Legion Ravalli Post 47

_____________

Every year, the American Legion invites students in 7th/8th grade and High School to participate in an essay contest to help them become aware of the nature of the U.S. Constitution and to consider the responsibilities they will eventually assume as mature citizens.

Earlier this year, Ravalli Post 47 invited teachers, parents and students to participate. They chose essay contest topics as related to the U.S. Constitution and to their curriculum. The essays were evaluated based on indications of understanding, research, creative thought and how well the essay addresses the Constitution and responsibilities of a citizen under the Constitution.

Post 47 awards $100 and a certificate of commendation to one winner from 7th/8th grade and one high school winner. The winners are sent forward to compete at the State American Legion level for a chance to win $400, $250 or $150 for 1st thru 3rd place finishes.

Our 2025 Ravalli Post 47 U.S. Constitution Essay Contest winners were Brooklyn Cary, a home-schooled 8th grade student, and Hamilton High School Senior Thea Jackson.

Additionally, Post 47 is proud to announce that Brooklyn won First Place at the State American Legion essay competition (again) and Thea won 2nd Place at the State level! They both will receive a plaque and additional scholarship checks. Congratulations to both amazing students and much appreciation to their teachers for their guidance and encouragement - Mrs Erin Miller-Cary and Ms Kiah Nisly, HHS U.S. Government.

Ravalli Post 47 encourages all students in 7th & 8th grade and high school to enter the contest next year. Essays are no more than 3 pages, double-spaced. It is definitely worth the effort to participate! For more information check out http://mtlegion.org/essaycontest.html

Congratulations to Past Commander Lowell Long on receiving the prestigious 100% Consolidated Post Report (CPR) award! This recognition is a testament to your outstanding leadership and dedication to the mission of The American Legion.

The CPR is a vital tool within our organization. It ensures that all the great work Posts do in their communities is accurately reported and recognized. By submitting a complete CPR, Posts not only showcase their commitment to serving veterans, youth, and the community but also help The American Legion demonstrate its impact on a national scale. Thank you, Commander Long, for setting such an excellent example for all of us!

Hello!
Please mark your calendars to help American Legion Ravalli Post 47 honor our fallen Veterans by placing Memorial Day crosses on Veteran graves.

We hope you will join us on Saturday, May 25th at 9am to place crosses this year. Please let me know if you are able to volunteer - every little bit helps!

Please meet at Riverview cemetery on Main St, Hamilton, at the info building to the right just inside the gates. We will provide additional instruction there. (Coffee and donuts too!)

We plan to collect the crosses on Saturday, June 1st at 8am and return them to the Post on 2nd St/Madison and would appreciate your help too.
Meet at the cemetery, same place.

RAIN PLAN for both days: We will still meet as planned unless lightning is present.

MEMORIAL DAY -- Please join us for Memorial Day activities on Monday, May 27th at 8AM:
Ravalli County Museum on Bedford St, military honors and wreath laying service, followed by a wreath laying service and honors for those lost at sea at Main Street Bridge over the Bitterroot River, then a wreath laying service and honors at Riverview Cemetery military memorial. Post 47 will march in the Corvallis Memorial Day parade as well.

Thank you again for volunteering to honor our Veterans. If you have any questions, please call or text me at 703-786-5990.

Sincerely,
Nancy Dezell
