Find out all that your land trust has accomplished this year, while meeting old friends and new who care about protecting open space in Hamden. Join us for our annual meeting on Thursday, November 12 at 7pm at the Hamden Senior Center meeting room (behind Miller Library). Following a short business meeting, our speaker will be CT arborist and tree enthusiast Kyle Dougherty speaking on "Notable Trees of Connecticut and Hamden." Hope you can join us.

Our restoration planting scheduled at our Winterberry Wetlands property on the Farmington Canal Trail behind Route 10 Restaurant (3810 Whitney Avenue in Hamden) this weekend is cancelled. We are rescheduling to Sunday, October 4 from 1 to 3pm. Hope our friends and volunteers can join us then.

Looking for an opportunity to make a difference in your community? Join Save the Sound and your land trust in an effort to clean up the perimeter of Six Lakes, the forested property in downtown Hamden that is fenced off, contaminated and owned by Olin Corporation. Join us Sunday, October 4 at noon at the corner of Putnam Avenue and Dixwell Avenue. Register to join this volunteer opportunity here: https://www.savethesound.org/get-involved/volunteer-opportunities/cleanups/.
The Six Lakes Perimeter Cleanup will improve the neighborhood while drawing attention to a site that could one day provide recreational trails for local residents - if and when the contamination is cleaned up.

Thank you to our volunteers this past Saturday. They did their job of removing invasive mugwort so well, that now we have a bare patch to fill with new native pollinator perennials. But we need to act fast. Please join us if you can for a pop-up plant installation at Hamden Town Center Park this Saturday, August 29 from 9-11am. Heavy rain cancels. Please check back here at www.hlct.org if in doubt as to the weather. Wear gloves and sturdy shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. Tools if you have them. We'll provide some tools.

Directions to the site: Pull into the Hamden Middle School (2623 Dixwell Avenue) and follow the road down the hill. Turn left at the “T” and take an immediate left at the sign that says “Event Parking.” Park and meet at the rain garden site on the side nearest the library.

The Hamden Land Conservation Trust is deeply grateful to the Claire C. Bennitt Watershed Fund for its generous award to help restore your land trust's Jepp Brook Preserve property. Funds will go toward creating a demonstration pollinator meadow just off the Farmington Canal Trail for the public to learn from and enjoy. Grant funding will allow us to purchase native pollinator meadow plants, a brush mower to help with invasives control and a shed for storing tools used in the restoration process. Follow along as the process unfolds. We expect to install plants when the weather cools this fall and we hope you'll join us for a volunteer day. Photo: homerewdardprice CC by 2.0. Thank you to everyone who turned out this morning for our Eagle Watch event led by HLCT President Gail Cameron and Past President Jim Sirch. We got some great views of the three young eagles flexing their wings on the edge of the nest. "It's as if they are putting on a show for us," observed HLCT Board Member Cathy Popp. So pleased to be able to host this annual event at our Henry and Irene Gargiulo property.

Postponing today's eagle watch to tomorrow, Sunday, May 31, due to high winds and rainy conditions. See you tomorrow at 10am at our meeting place at the former Porto Tire (2490 State Street) across from the land trust's Garguilo property.

Organizations are only able to be as successful as the community enables them to be. Check out the latest about Gather New Haven:

A local environmental nonprofit has handed over to city government 19 community gardens and three urban farms -- raising questions about the future of those publicly owned greenspaces and the group that used to help maintain them.

From the scenic trails at Rocky Top Preserve, to the rare glacial kettle at Johnson's Pond, to our Gargiulo Wildlife Preserve that protects an active bald eagle nest—the Hamden Land Conservation Trust works hard every day to care for the wild landscapes that define Hamden. We also bring the community together through educational programs and events, creating opportunities to learn, explore, and connect with others who share a love for the natural world.

Your land trust is part of the Great Give 2026, a 36-hour community-wide celebration supporting nonprofits across Greater New Haven. Starting tomorrow through May 7 at 8:00 pm, visit this link to make a meaningful impact with a gift of any amount: https://www.thegreatgive.org/organizations/hamden-land-conservation-trust.

Your support will help preserve Hamden’s forests, wetlands, and wildlife—ensuring these special places remain vibrant and accessible for generations to come.

Join us. Help keep Hamden wild, green, and thriving.

I’m ready to support Hamden Land Conservation Trust on May 6, 2026 during The Great Give. Learn more about Hamden Land Conservation Trust and all the other organizations participating in The Great Give.
