Happy Birthday, Mary Smith Lockwood, (October 24, 1831 – November 9, 1922) one of four of DAR's founders! ✨
Great-granddaughter of Revolutionary War patriots, Lockwood was unable to contain herself when in 1890 the Sons of the Revolution refused to allow women to join. No stranger to women’s rights advocacy (she was close to Susan B. Anthony among others), Lockwood took it upon herself to write an editorial about the heroics of Hannah White Arnett in The Washington Post entitled “Were there no mothers of the Revolution?”
Her indignation got the ball rolling and the NSDAR was founded—in her own parlor no less—on October 11, 1890.
Lockwood was the DAR's fist Historian General and was the inspiration for the construction of DAR Headquarters. She was a prolific writer, covering women's rights issues, and was president of the the Women's Press Club. At Swarthmore Arms, her formidable Washington DC home, she hosted many distinguished local and international guests and was a well-known DC hostess.
Lockwood died in 1922, and is the only one of the Four Founders to be buried in Washington.
