My experience with loss simply helps explain the woman behind it and the road that eventually led me to Ghana.

Today, I’m not here as Nkosuohemaa.

I’m not here to talk about a fundraiser.

Today, I’m simply a mother remembering her daughter.

Her name is Lauren.

Pregnancy and infant loss can leave families carrying memories of a future that never got the chance to happen.

The birthdays we imagined.

The first days of school.

The Christmas mornings.

The person we wondered they would become.

Lauren didn’t get those moments.

But she got something death couldn’t take away.

She got a place in our family.

She got a name.

She got a mother who will continue saying it.

And she left a legacy that continues showing up in my life in ways I never could have predicted.

So tonight at 7 pm, I’ll light a candle for my daughter.

Lauren.

And it’s for every baby whose name is being whispered somewhere tonight.

Every mother.

Every father.

Every sibling.

Every family that remembers.

We remember them.

And tonight, we let the light say what words sometimes can’t.

Why $23.30? 🇬🇭

There’s meaning behind the number.

Ghana’s international country calling code is +233.

So for The Pokrom 100:

$23.30 = 1 Christmas food package
$233 = 10 Christmas food packages

I wanted even the donation amount to connect back to Ghana.

Each package is planned to include rice, cooking oil, tomato paste, seasonings, Milo, and biscuits for the children.

100 families. $23.30 each. $2,330 goal.

I went to Pokrom for my naming ceremony.

The chiefs selected me.

I didn’t travel to Ghana looking for a royal title. I certainly didn’t walk into Pokrom expecting one.

That is why I take what happened afterward seriously.

A title associated with development comes with responsibility.

The Pokrom 100 is one expression of that responsibility.

I went to Ghana because I wanted to meet the people making Aloha Glamour’s products.

While there, I was also going to experience my own Ghanaian naming ceremony.

That ceremony took me to Pokrom for the very first time.

I thought I was going to receive a name.

I had no idea what was coming next.

Tomorrow: My first day in Pokrom.
