✨ YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST COHORT SPOTLIGHT | CLASS OF 2027

📣 It’s time to meet Shilah McCollum!

Shilah, City Programs project manager with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, has a heart for helping young people recognize their potential and discover opportunities they might not otherwise know exist.

Through her involvement with Girls with a Vision Mentoring Program and the Youth Mentorship Program at Now Faith Outreach Ministries, she's helped encourage and mentor young people. She's also demonstrated her commitment to community leadership through her involvement in Keesler Air Force Base's Honorary Commander Program, the Greater Biloxi Economic Development Foundation, and the Downtown Main Street Biloxi Board.

These experiences have strengthened Shilah's interest in community leadership and her desire to learn more about philanthropy. And when it comes to giving back, she knows just how important a little encouragement can be: “Sometimes, young people simply need someone to introduce them to an organization, encourage them to apply for something, help them see the value in education, or show them that they are capable of more than they may believe.”

Welcome to the Cohort, Shilah! 💗

Follow along as we introduce more of the inspiring young women stepping up to lead and give back across South Mississippi!

✨ YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST COHORT SPOTLIGHT | CLASS OF 2027

Today, we're kicking off our Cohort spotlights! Follow along and get to know the inspiring young women stepping up to lead, give back, and help shape the future of South Mississippi.

📣 First up, meet Katelyn Winstead Scarborough, a lifelong Mississippi Gulf Coast resident with a special connection to the communities she calls home.

As a Business Development officer at Navigator Credit Union, Katelyn has seen how financial education can help individuals and families build stronger futures. She's also passionate about supporting women and children and believes in the difference local nonprofits can make in people's lives.

Through the Young Philanthropist Cohort, Katelyn hopes to “learn from established community leaders, connect with other young professionals who are invested in our community, and develop the knowledge and perspective needed to become a more intentional and impactful philanthropist.”

Welcome to the Cohort, Katelyn! 💗

Happy Boss’s Day to our president and executive director, Dr. Christen Hartley Duhé! 💐

What can we say about Christen? The list is long! For starters, she brings positivity, energy, and a can-do attitude to everything she does. She’s a go-getter, a problem-solver, and a leader who makes those around her believe that anything is possible.

But there’s more! Over the past year, we’ve also had the joy of watching her embrace motherhood. 💕 The way she balances her career with being a devoted wife and mother is nothing short of inspiring!

Christen, thank you for your leadership, your friendship, your encouragement, and your unwavering commitment to growing the Foundation and making a difference in South Mississippi. 💚

We always enjoy opportunities to connect with others and talk about the work happening at GCCF! 💚

Last week, Dr. Christen Hartley Duhé, our president and executive director, joined the Gulf Coast Human Resource Association at its monthly meeting to talk about the Foundation, the many ways we support our communities, and how generosity helps make it all possible. Thank you for the invitation and the opportunity to connect with your members!

The safety of our South Mississippi neighbors is always on our minds, especially as we prepare for potential impacts from Hurricane Isaias.

The Harrison County MS Emergency Management Agency reminds us that hurricane impacts can extend 150 miles or more from the center of a storm. Complete your preparations today, and continue monitoring official forecasts and following guidance from local emergency officials. We also encourage you to follow the Mississippi Department of Transportation for information about road conditions throughout the weekend.

Stay safe, South Mississippi!

With the potential for significant weather impacts from Tropical Storm Isaias, we’ve made the decision to postpone our Donor Appreciation Breakfast originally scheduled for October 9. The safety of our guests and our team is our priority.

If you had planned to attend the breakfast, we’ll be in touch soon with updated event information.

We may have to wait a little longer this year, but we’re looking forward to gathering soon for a morning of gratitude and giving.

Please be safe and prepared.

Have you ever wondered what goes into choosing GCCF grant and scholarship recipients?

It starts with people willing to take the time to read applications, consider each one carefully, and help recommend who receives funding. That’s where our volunteer reviewers come in!

If you’re 21 or older and reside in George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, or Stone County, we’d love for you to consider joining us. You’ll get a closer look at the people, organizations, and ideas behind the applications, and have a voice in helping us make thoughtful funding decisions.

Your perspective matters. We hope you’ll share it with us!

Ready to be part of our next Cohort? Apply today! Know a young woman who would be a great fit? Share this opportunity with her!
