Our shelters and resource centers are at the heart of what we do. But serving our community also means making sure people know who we are, what we offer, and how they can be part of the work.

We’re grateful to the Lauren Faith Smith Ministry for Nonviolence and the Annunciation community for bringing people and organizations together around the critical need for housing and homelessness services in our community. Strong connections help us better serve our neighbors and make sure no one has to navigate these challenges alone.

Two of our St. John’s Ministries locations - Wellspring/Women’s Shelter and the Micah Center - are part of the Navarino Neighborhood, so we were glad to join the Navarino Neighborhood Association for their annual pizza, ice cream and National Night Out celebration!

We enjoyed meeting our neighbors, learning more about the neighborhood, and sharing a little about St. John’s Ministries and the work happening at our nearby locations.

Thank you to the Navarino Neighborhood Association for bringing neighbors, businesses and organizations together for a fun summer evening. We’re looking forward to more opportunities to connect!

Four members of the St. John’s Ministries team recently spent two days at the Global Leadership Summit - learning, growing, connecting and gaining new perspective that they can bring back to our organization.

Our team had the opportunity to learn alongside leaders from across the country and around the world. The Summit brings together faith leaders, CEOs, creatives, culture-shapers and other thought leaders to share practical ideas for stronger leadership.

For SJM, leadership is about more than managing an organization. It’s about growing as individuals, strengthening our teams, and continually looking for ways to better serve people experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this that encourage us to grow in faith, deepen our leadership skills, build meaningful connections and bring new ideas back to the work we do every day.

As GLS puts it: “Everyone wins when a leader gets better.”

👋 Tomorrow! Come see St. John’s Ministries in action.

Cold weather season will be here before we know it, and we’re looking for people to join our seasonal shelter team at St. John’s Ministries.

We’re hiring Support Staff and Security Staff to help create a safe, welcoming environment for adults experiencing homelessness during the winter months.

These roles are hands-on and people-centered. Our seasonal staff help with the day-to-day operations of the shelters, respond to challenges, support our guests, and most importantly, build rapport and meaningful connections with the people we serve.

We’re looking for people who are reliable, calm under pressure, willing to take initiative, and have a strong desire to serve others in our community.

Seasonal staff will begin before our shelters open on November 1 to allow time for training and preparation.

Our Shelter Coordinator, Kiara, is here to talk about a need that may seem simple but makes a big difference: bath towels and washcloths.

We provide showers at both our Men’s and Women’s Shelter facilities throughout the year. During our warm-weather Drop-In Days, guests can access showers along with meals, laundry, hygiene supplies, clothing, and other basic needs. Our Safe Sleep and Women’s Stability Shelter participants also may use our shower facilities in the evenings.

And during our Cold Weather Season (when more than 600 individuals stayed with us last season) our shower facilities are an important part of daily life for many of our guests.

So, we go through a lot of towels! And having a clean towel and washcloth after a shower is more than just a practical necessity - it’s one small way we can provide dignity, comfort, and care.

Right now, we are very low on bath towels and would be grateful for donations of new or gently used bath towels and washcloths.

📍 Donations can be dropped off at our Men’s Shelter (411 S. Jefferson Street) Monday - Friday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

Thoughtful gestures like this do more than fill empty stomachs. They create moments of connection, remind our guests that they're seen, and show what a caring community looks like in action.

St. John's Ministries provides shelter services from May through October, too.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that our shelter services end when our Cold-Weather Season concludes in April. While our services look different during the warmer months, we've provided year-round shelter support since 2018 through our dual-season shelter model.

During our Warm-Weather Season (May–October), we offer program-based shelter designed to meet the unique needs of those we serve.

This year marked an exciting milestone with the launch of our pilot Women's Stability Shelter, joining our Safe Sleep program for men to provide dedicated shelter options for both women and men.

We're already seeing the impact.

Through the first three months, we've served 81 individuals between Men's Safe Sleep and Women's Stability Shelter during our Warm-Weather Season, and provided 2,960 nights of shelter - a 159% increase compared to the average of the previous three warm-weather seasons.

Why? Because when people are offered shelter that feels safe, supportive, and appropriate to their needs, they're more likely to come inside. For many women, having a dedicated shelter space removes barriers created by past trauma and opens the door to safety, stability, and hope.

Our services may change with the seasons, but our commitment to serving our neighbors doesn't.
