Canada's euthanasia laws go far beyond terminal illness. Many Canadians are still unaware that people who are not dying can qualify for euthanasia, that the mandatory waiting period has been eliminated for those whose natural death is reasonably foreseeable, and that people may qualify even when they refuse available treatment. Changes introduced through Bill C-7 in 2021 dramatically expanded eligibility and removed important safeguards. While euthanasia based solely on mental illness remains delayed until March 2027, people with mental health conditions may still qualify if they meet other medical eligibility requirements. Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, warns that Canadians need to understand what the law actually permits. These are not simply hypothetical concerns. They are questions of life, death, and the protection of vulnerable Canadians. We must continue educating the public, challenging misinformation, and speaking out for the protection of every human life.
