It is okay to use different mobility aids on different days.

Disability is not always predictable. Pain levels, energy, balance, strength, and symptoms can change from one day to the next.

What works today might not work tomorrow, and that is completely okay.

Using a cane one day and a wheelchair the next does not make you a fraud.

Using a walker for longer outings but walking independently at home does not mean you're exaggerating your needs.

You're just giving yourself the support you need in the moment.

Mobility aids are tools. Their purpose is to help you move through the world safely and comfortably.

The "right" mobility aid is simply the one that helps you the most on that particular day.

People with visual impairments, when visiting a restroom, will often need to touch more surfaces than sighted individuals in order to locate the same facilities.

Tom Babinszki, an accessibility consultant at Even Grounds, has the solution through his project: tactile 3D-printed restroom maps. These maps are mini replicas of a restroom that you can feel—showing miniature versions of the sink, toilet, paper holder, hand dryer, urinals, and doors. Placed next to the ADA restroom sign, they let you preview the layout before entering, so you can navigate independently with minimal contact with surfaces.

Words Matter: Disability is not a bad word. Avoid euphemisms like “differently-abled."

Using vague or softened language can minimize real experiences and barriers. Be clear, respectful, and accurate–say “disability.”

First come, first served:

♿ Twin Lakes State Beach

🧑🏽‍💻 Wheelchairs can be reserved at least five days before your visit. If you don't make a reservation, the wheelchairs are still available on a first-come, first-served basis. 😊

Beach wheelchairs are also available at Seabright and Twin Lakes state beaches on a first-come, first-served only basis. Check in at the lifeguard tower.
