Down to Defend We have established safety classes aimed at combating this alarming reality.

In response to deeply troubling statistics revealing that individuals with intellectual disabilities face a staggering sevenfold higher risk of sexual assault compared to those without disabilities, Down to Defend has taken action. Our mission is clear: to educate and equip those with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing safety resources to lead a more fulfilling life! Among the diverse range of classes we provide are Karate and Self-defense, CPR training, Infant Swim Rescue, and workshops focused on fostering healthy relationships. In addition to our educational initiatives, we extend our support to new parents in the Grand Rapids community who welcome babies born with Down syndrome or other chromosome abnormalities. We deliver celebration baskets to these families at local hospitals, offering not only practical resources but also heartfelt encouragement as they begin their parenting journey under unique circumstances.

Novalee is 1 year old and already has a way of lighting up every room she enters. She loves music, dancing, and waving “hi” to everyone she meets!

Her mom describes her as loving, joyful, and deeply adored by her family and friends. Novalee has brought an incredible amount of happiness into their lives simply by being exactly who she is.

If her mom could tell the world one thing, it would be this:

“Down syndrome does not limit the amount of love, joy, or possibilities a person can bring into this world.”

And little Novalee is already showing just how true that is…one wave, one dance, and one smile at a time. 💙💛

Hard work, determination, and a whole lot of confidence!

We couldn’t be prouder of our Down to Defend karate students for earning their yellow belts! Watching their growth over the past year has been nothing short of incredible. Every new skill, every challenge overcome, and every milestone celebrated reminds us why we do what we do!

A huge thank you to King’s Table Ministries for being such an amazing partner and creating a space where individuals of ALL abilities can learn, grow, and thrive!

Meet Isaac! 💙💛

Isaac is 3 years old and truly lives out his name, he is pure joy. He is charismatic, full of light, gives the warmest and most intentional hugs, fist pumps everyone he meets, and loves his siblings BIG. His mom says he is incredibly emotionally in-tune and never misses an opportunity to make someone smile.

But Isaac hasn’t just brought joy to his family, he’s changed the way they live.

His mom shares that before Isaac, life often felt like a checklist: rushing to the next thing, setting high expectations, and focusing on what needed to happen next. Through Isaac, they learned to get rid of the checklist. 🤭

He has taught them to meet their children exactly where they are, to focus on their physical and emotional well-being, and to simply soak in this season of life together.

Because there’s no rush. No timeline they have to follow. Just one life, one chance at parenthood, and a whole lot of moments worth slowing down for. ❤️

And according to Mom, diagnosis or not, all of her kids can just live at home forever. 🥹😂💙💛

Meet Francisco! 💙💛

Francisco is 1 and if there’s one thing his mom wants the world to know about him, it’s that his joy is so much bigger than his diagnosis. ❤️

At just one year old, Francisco has already taught his family to slow down, celebrate the little moments, and see life through a whole new perspective.

His mom describes him as funny, curious, determined, and full of joy! 🥹💙

Through Francisco, his family has learned that Down syndrome is only one small part of who he is. It doesn’t define his personality, his potential, or the happiness he brings to those around him.

His mom hopes others will take the time to look beyond the diagnosis and truly get to know the individual.

Because before anything else, Francisco is Francisco. A little boy with his own personality, his own journey, and so much to offer the world.

See the person first. Celebrate who they are. And never let a diagnosis overshadow the joy they bring. 💙💛

Meet Connor! 💙💛

Connor is 1½ years old and is a sweet, funny, determined little boy who brings so much joy to everyone around him! ❤️

He loves music, clapping, waving, playing with his big brother, and making people smile. But behind that contagious happiness is also a little boy who has already shown incredible strength.

At just 4 months old, Connor underwent heart surgery. Since then, he has continued to grow, learn, and show his family that his possibilities are endless. 💙

His mom shares that one of the most unexpected gifts of their journey has been the incredible people they’ve met, the connections they’ve made, and the ways Connor has opened their hearts to a world they never could have imagined.

Her advice to new and expecting families is simple but meaningful: Enjoy the journey. 💛

Because while the road may look different than you originally imagined, it can also be filled with beautiful moments, meaningful friendships, and experiences you never knew you needed.

Connor’s story reminds us that a diagnosis doesn’t define a child’s future, and sometimes the most unexpected journeys bring the greatest gifts.

And as his family so beautifully shares, “We are so lucky to call him ours!” 💙💛

Jaxon is 4 years old and is full of joy, laughter, determination, love, and a whole lot of personality! ❤️

His mom wants the world to understand something important: Down syndrome is only one part of who Jaxon is. It does not define him or determine what his future will look like.

She hopes people will take the time to look beyond the diagnosis and truly get to know the person behind it. Because Jaxon is so much more than an extra chromosome, he is a little boy with his own personality, strengths, abilities, and a story that is still being written.

Through Jaxon, his mom has learned to celebrate progress, appreciate the little things, and never underestimate someone’s abilities simply because their journey looks different.

Jaxon’s story reminds us that a diagnosis is not a prediction of someone’s potential. Every individual deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and show the world what they’re capable of.

Meet Jace! 💙💛

Jace is 5 years old, and while he may still be little, his mom says he has already become one of her greatest teachers. ❤️

Before Jace was born, his family already knew he had Down syndrome. His mom remembers spending much of her pregnancy feeling scared of the unknown wondering what his diagnosis would mean and who he would become.

But the moment Jace entered the world, everything changed.

“I saw my first son, a perfect little baby, not a baby with Down syndrome.” 🥹💙

Since then, Jace has taught his mom some of life’s most meaningful lessons: to slow down, appreciate the little things, find joy in the simplest moments, and embrace patience, acceptance, and unconditional love.

At just 5 years old, Jace is a beautiful reminder that sometimes our greatest teachers are the ones we least expect.

And that before any diagnosis, milestone, or expectation, there is a child deserving of love, celebration, and the opportunity to simply be themselves. 💙💛

Meet Blake! 💙💛

When Blake was born, his mom shares that Down syndrome was completely new to her. In fact, Blake was the first person with Down syndrome she had ever met. She didn’t know what to expect or what their future would look like, but she knew she loved him. ❤️

Little by little, Blake introduced her to a world filled with joy, resilience, advocacy, community, and inclusion. He taught her that a diagnosis is only one small piece of someone’s story. Blake is funny, loving, determined, silly, sensitive, resilient and most importantly, he is Blake.

Her message to other families is one she has learned throughout their journey: Never set limits on your child and ignore the limits others try to set for them.

To the parent who may be scared of what lies ahead, she wants you to know: Your baby is your baby. You will learn, grow, advocate, celebrate milestones, find your community, and discover strength you didn’t know you had.

And one day, you may look back and realize that the life you were once afraid of is a life you wouldn’t trade for anything. 💙💛

Meet Ryan! 💙💛

Ryan is 43 years old, and his sister says he has shaped her life in almost every way. One of her favorite memories goes all the way back to their high school days. ❤️

While his sister played varsity volleyball, Ryan became the team manager. He attended every practice and game, wore his custom team shirt, handed out water, joined the team huddles, learned all the cheers, and high-fived opponents after every game. Before long, he wasn’t just the manager, he was the beloved little brother of every girl on the team.

That sense of belonging followed Ryan beyond the volleyball court. He walked the halls receiving hugs and high fives, building friendships that extended to his teammates’ siblings, friends, and families.

Ryan’s story is such a beautiful example of what true inclusion and belonging can look like. He wasn’t simply present, he was a valued part of his school community. He found his place, built genuine friendships, and thrived.

As his sister remembers it, “His joy was contagious.” 💙💛

Meet Piercen! 💙💛

Piercen is 3 years old, a funny, determined, loving, and sometimes spicy little girl with so much to offer. 💕

Her family hopes the world sees Piercen the way they do: not as Down syndrome first, but as a little girl who deserves every opportunity to learn, grow, make friends, be included, and be challenged.

Piercen may reach milestones in her own time and do some things differently, but she has taught her family that different never means less. She doesn’t need the world to lower its expectations, she needs people to believe in her, make room for her, and give her the opportunity to show what she can do.

Through Piercen, her family has learned to slow down, celebrate the little things, and stop measuring progress against someone else’s timeline. Most importantly, she has taught them that belonging isn’t about fitting in … it’s about being loved, accepted, and valued exactly as you are. 💙💛
