JUST A FEW DAYS AWAY! Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton is livestreaming Bill McKibben's keynote talk from Faith in Place's 2026 Environment & Spirituality Summit.

The Summit's theme, Grounded Resistance, explores how we engage the world from a place of deep grounding, collective support and sustained resistance. McKibben is an author, educator and environmentalist who helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, and recently founded Third Act, an organizing movement for people over 60. Drawing on decades of organizing, writing and movement-building, he'll ground the Summit in the moral and spiritual stakes of the climate crisis and invite communities of faith to harness their collective power to confront fossil fuel reliance and advance climate justice.

Movie Description
“Singing Back the Buffalo” is an award‑winning 2024 Canadian documentary directed by award‑winning Cree filmmaker Tasha Hubbard (nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up). It tells the story of Indigenous visionaries, scientists, and communities working to rematriate the buffalo — bringing large herds back to the Great Plains after centuries of near‑extinction.

The documentary follows the buffalo’s journey across the Northern Plains in 2022, meeting with leaders such as Blackfoot Elder Leroy Little Bear. The film blends personal narrative with scientific and cultural insights, showing how buffalo restoration is both a cultural renewal and an environmental necessity.

The film reflects on the historical near‑extinction of buffalo — from over 50 million to fewer than 250 — and it's devastating impact on Indigenous communities.

This is a great book about Native Americans in the Great Lakes region, and an excellent opportunity to meet the author virtually.

On Sept 22, join us on Zoom for a talk by historian Robert Downes on Native American history in the Midwest. His award-winning book "Raw Deal" is well-researched and engaging, and provides an honest account of the interactions between Native Americans and early settlers.

His book "Raw Deal" traces the heroic efforts of the Indians to retain their homeland through centuries of warfare and exploitation.
