Set in rural Kamwenge where the majority of families live in extreme poverty, Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School (KSVS) is becoming one of the most modern schools in Uganda, whose graduates will help to transform the district of Kamwenge and the country of Uganda in coming years.

Kamwenge's population is primarily indigenous farming families who fled to Tanzania from the brutal regime of Idi Amin in the 1970s. They returned to Uganda in 2000, settling in Kamwenge, but they never emerged from poverty.

KSVS is the vision of Rev. Canon John Mulindabigwi who founded the school in 2007 with 3 classrooms, 6 teachers, and 22 students. As the first students graduate and return home with successful careers, parents and children come to understand the transforming power of an education.

The expectation is that the children of Kamwenge will be the ones to transform their villages, relying heavily on their existence as an agricultural community. KSVS is bringing coffee cultivation to the community. They are experimenting with raising cocoa trees, eucalyptus trees for lumber, and foods such as tilapia fish and chickens.

The Ride this year will support operations and students at Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School.

Since 2014, these bike rides have raised funds for:
• Professional Teaching Kitchen and Dining Hall
• STEM Center
• Girls’ dorm
• 12-unit teachers’ residence
• Carpentry and Metalworking Shop

Rider Spotlight: Meet Suzi Benes

Suzi has participated in the ride every year. In fact, the entire Benes family members are veterans of the Partners in Mission bike ride from the time we began, to Lake Geneva in 2014.

She was a volunteer in 2022 when she was still recovering from an unfortunate accident on the route in 2021. As she said, her ride was “shortened due to a stubborn pole” on the trail. Suzi’s son, Cam and daughter, Bailey have also ridden with her. Cam is an experienced rider who looks forward to assisting with other bikers with issues as they come up.

Her husband, Rich, is a volunteer, having both helped along the route and taken photos of riders. This year he will be holding a sign to direct riders.

Suzi looks forward to riding each year. "This is a great organization in Uganda that provides education, care, and support for so many kids and shows them firsthand the love of Jesus…plus it is just plain fun!” She likes that the route takes riders into beautiful areas and is accessible to riders from novice to expert cyclists.

Riders,

We are just under 3 weeks away until the 11th annual Partners in Mission bike ride so if you are on the fence, please consider jumping in and ride. It really is a lot of fun and the funds raised will make an enormous difference in the lives of so many. We will start at the First Presbyterian Church of GE and end at Two Hound Red in downtown GE, where we will celebrate with good food and drink.

Below is the map of the route.

Rider Spotlight: Meet Keith Mote

We are excited to feature Keith in our latest post, where we share the story of his involvement in the Partners in Mission & the Fox and Hound Bike Ride. The Ride supports Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School in Uganda.

Keith has participated in the PIM bike ride almost every year since its inception. He's enjoyed riding with old friends and making new friends along the way. An active marathon runner and bicyclist, his annual tradition of riding in the PIM event was abruptly halted in 2022 when he suffered a severe stroke that disabled the left side of his body. With God's grace and healing, and after countless hours of physical and occupational therapy, Keith is now able to walk, drive, and ride. Keith will return to Fox and Hound Ride this year on his firefly yellow recumbent Catrike. Returning to the ride has been a motivating goal for the past two years and he's excited to again participate.

Keith and his family are members of First Pres Church in Glen Ellyn. He has served as a Missions Elder. He is a member of the church's Missions Council where he has witnessed the remarkable impact that the Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School in Uganda has on the community it serves.

Wishing everyone a great 4th of July. Have fun celebrating with family and friends!
