Wendell Berry, farmer, writer, and intellectual, who influenced Kentucky, the Nation, and Georgetown College, died yesterday, August 31, 2026. Berry taught and lectured at GC. He noted his stint teaching at Georgetown in 1957/58 in his book The Hidden Wound. Berry’s visits to campus spanned the decades and benefited everyone who had the opportunity to engage with him. Yesterday was a beautiful day on campus with outdoor dining, music, and dozens of organizations, sororities, and fraternities engaging with students. The Fish Fry and Involvement Fair on Robert N. Dr. Tim Griffith was honored with the Walker Manning Award at GC's Opening Convocation this week. Dr. Griffith and Provost Dr. Jonathan Sands Wise celebrate this achievement outside John L. GC’s Opening Convocation featured a message from Dr. Michael Newcomer ’05 to all students and the newest Tigers, the Class of 2030. Newcomer shared; you are where you are meant to be. Life is lived in the swerve, where the plan, if there is one, changes and challenges you. Building a successful life is about doing the small things repeatedly because tenacity compounds. The resilience to accept, lean into, and enjoy the swerve is part of the Georgetown College experience. Embrace it, enjoy it, and you will succeed in any endeavor.

Today, the newest Tigers gave back to our campus and City of Georgetown, Kentucky - Government we call home. Rooted in Christian love and service, a part of the GC mission, first-year students, along with faculty and staff, spent the day working on projects around campus and at The Gathering Place, AMEN House, Boston Community Park, Scott/Bourbon Counties Habitat for Humanity, and Hometown Manor, among other local nonprofits
