Our final presentation of Session 1 takes us to Toluca, Mexico, and an extraordinary tree thought to be more than 300 years old.
Jonatan Emmanuel Flores-Bonilla is examining an ancient Chiranthodendron pentadactylon – the Mexican hand-flower tree that forms the holotype from which the species was originally described and was studied by Alexander von Humboldt.
Growing within an extremely restricted urban setting, the tree has faced water stress, declining vitality and serious structural challenges. Sonic tomography has shown major loss of structural integrity at the base of the trunk.
But closer morphophysiological investigation suggests that this veteran tree may have developed its own concealed structural adaptations.
Jonatan explores what its root wood can tell us about the remarkable capacity of ageing trees to reorganise and survive under extreme conditions.

When a mature urban tree has suffered years of topping or severe pruning, is removal and replacement really the only option?
Ioan Stetca argues that in many cases it isn’t.
His Conference presentation explores crown restoration as an alternative approach for heavily mutilated trees, looking at how severe pruning disrupts tree architecture and stimulates new growth which can gradually create unstable crown systems.
But these damaged trees may also retain enormous value. Cavities, exposed wood, decay and irregular crown structures can provide important habitat for fungi, insects, birds and bats – while the mature tree continues to deliver benefits that a replacement tree may take decades to provide.
Using practical case studies, Ioan explores how gradual, informed restoration can balance structural risk, tree physiology, biodiversity and the long-term value of mature trees.

The KAA is so excited to be hosting another ISA TRAQ program. Dr. Fountain started off the 2nd day of instruction outdoors to review tree biology. We are grateful for the Shelby County Cooperative Extension Office as our host location.
