An update from the captain of the ship 💜💚
Captain—Cap to those who know him—has come so far since joining his foster family. After being bounced around before he landed here, he needed much more than a few days to settle. During his first month, he was anxious, more reactive to his triggers, and sometimes went days without eating. He lost nine pounds. We had blood work done, made adjustments to his Prozac with his care team, and gave him time to learn that his new routine was here to stay.
Decompression takes time. A dog who is overwhelmed, frightened, or living without the support they need can show behavior that looks dangerous. We have to take that behavior seriously and look at what’s behind it. For Captain, that has meant learning his needs, respecting his limits, and building a reasonable plan for management and enrichment around him.
Now we know that Cap does best with a cozy space reserved just for him. Gates and a management plan keep him separated from the other pets. Music or TV helps him settle when he needs to spend time alone, and he eats better when he gets his full daily portion in the morning instead of having it split into meals.
New people meet Cap slowly and with close supervision. He only needs to meet people who will be a regular part of his life. There’s no reason to ask him to greet every visitor or put him in a situation he isn’t ready for. Those boundaries help keep everyone safe, especially Cap.
We’ve learned what makes him happy, too. He loves beef trachea and yak cheese chews, and his favorite games are tag and keep-away with his orange ball. He’s built wonderful bonds with his foster family. Today, he’s eating normally and seems so much happier.
Captain has a bite history, and we take that seriously. He is also a predictable, stable, wonderful dog whose needs we can plan around. We’re fortunate to give him a permanent foster home as our first official Sanctuary SoulDog.
We’ll keep sharing Captain’s story to help people understand decompression, how dogs communicate, and the difference an individualized plan can make. 🐾
