Newsday recently took a closer look at The Waldorf School of Garden City and why families are increasingly seeking educational experiences that prioritize creativity, connection, and hands-on learning over technology infused classrooms.

“We still understand technology and know how to use it, but...we’re using it to aid us, not completely do the work for us.” Arnav Kohli, Class of 2026.

We are grateful to Newsday for capturing the conversations, classrooms, and community behind our media mindful philosophy.

Students do not use computers in class until sixth grade and there are no smart boards offered until seventh grade. Educators even withhold calculators until ninth grade.

Looking for a meaningful summer experience to share with your young child?

The Waldorf School of Garden City’s Summer Parent & Child Program welcomes children from birth to age three and their caregivers for weekly classes in a warm, home-like environment. Guided by an experienced early childhood educator, children engage in imaginative play, songs, stories, seasonal activities, and outdoor exploration while caregivers build community and connect with other families.

Each morning begins with hands-on experiences such as kneading dough and churning butter, creating a gentle rhythm that supports wonder, creativity, and healthy early childhood development.

Last week, we welcomed the Brooklyn Waldorf School and the Rudolf Steiner School to our campus for the 5th Grade Greek Olympics.

As part of the fifth grade curriculum, students study Ancient Greece. Throughout the day, students represented different city-states — Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Thebes. Taking part in traditional Olympic events, students competed in the Pentathlon events, including javelin, discus, long jump, and Greek wrestling.

The day concluded with a beautiful Closing Ceremony, where every child received a medal honoring qualities such as strength, speed, determination, courage, and grace — real qualities genuinely seen and celebrated in each student's effort.
