Residents arrived to Hempstead Plains Preserve in Uniondale with native trees tucked under their arms, flowering shrubs in hand and a deeper understanding of how small backyard plantings can contribute to Long Island’s environmental health.

More than 400 people registered for the Town of Hempstead’s Arbor Day native plant and tree giveaway, set for April 24. The community event designed to encourage sustainable landscaping while helping restore local ecosystems.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 17th Annual Prairie Benefit!

Did you know Long Island has a native tallgrass prairie called the Hempstead Plains?

Home to rare plants and wildlife, the Hempstead Plains once covered more than 40,000 acres. Today, less than 100 acres remain.

This year’s Prairie Benefit brought together supporters from across Long Island to help protect and restore this rare ecosystem. Funds raised support stewardship of the Hempstead Plains Preserve, including habitat restoration, education, and prescribed burns that help the prairie thrive.

We’re especially grateful to this year’s honorees:
• Scott W. Emmons — Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience
• Doug Schmid — Sierra Club Long Island Educator

Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, and helped make the evening possible.
