Peacework is a student group that explores alternatives to violence, is open to everyone, including faculty and staff on campus. Started in 2002 as a support group for students in the post-9/11 era, the club at Nassau Community College has met every week since and engaged in peace-related activities. Its vigils and demonstrations as well as discussions of peace and justice issues have given it
a unique presence on campus. This current year we have participated in hosting various speakers at Nassau Community College, panel discussions, communicating with foreign students via Skype, presenting films on campus, visiting cultural museums, visiting places of worship, visiting Riverhead Jail facility, visiting organic farms, volunteering on and off campus, running at 5K events. Amongst peace advocates invited are Walter Pietsch and speakers from the Listening Project (film). We participate in cultural events such as visiting the Jewish Heritage Museum and going to a temple with Jewish Student Organization. We learn about nutrition and organic food production at Homecoming Farm and Ryder Farm in NY. We volunteer to bring and serve lunch to Habitat for Humanity Nassau County volunteers. We are participating actively both on and off campus. Our open-door policy means we welcome members from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We hope to create a positive impact forming coalitions and working with various organizations. We tear into intolerance by bringing awareness to the student body. We bring students to become more involved in the mission for peace by learning from a variety of sources and ultimately becoming better advocates for peace.
