Major Announcement...we finally have been able to transform a storage building into a hurricane shelter!
We've always had a place for the monkeys to go, but it was not ideal. Not only was the building actually an office, it was a bit far from the monkey yard. Just getting the monkeys transferred from their habitats to the holding cages was a nightmare!
Picture wheelbarrows and winding paths, all surrounded by loud and excited monkeys; not to mention lots of heavy lifting. The transfer cage alone is 47 pounds!!
We have now built a runway set up to come into the building from the existing habitat runways and open into the transfer cage which will sit on an adjustable table cart (more on the cart and the process soon).
The monkeys will then be rolled over to a holding cage and remain there, protected, until the storm passes. All done without having to handle the monkey.
The pictures don't do justice to how long and very tall the runway is, the building pictures aren't so hot either 😹, we'll have more, soon. **
Another thank you to the P.A.W. volunteers and Mina Rella-Hapeman , for helping us complete this major task!
Also wanted to give a long overdue THANK YOU to a wonderful friend and long time supporter to both the monkeys and humans, Wilma E Clevenger .
She gave the humans some gift cards to a local ice cream shop so we tried to complete the project first and then go celebrate......well this ended up taking a lot longer than planned BUT that ice cream is in the horizon, we've heard great reviews and can hardly wait, thank you Wilma!!!!
**Riley saw the runway, his reaction is priceless
