People are often surprised to learn that we sometimes have to give meds to the monkeys. A lot of the time they will get human drugs such as amoxicillin, clavamox, gabapentin, etc. the draw back, though, a normal dose is for a grown human, not a little 8 pound monkey!
Which means that pills need to be cut into pieces and then ground into a powder. Liquids are usually easier to give but sometimes there's a lot of it, and it's usually quite bitter. It can be challenging to find something that the monks will consume and not lose interest in.

And so the med game begins; what type of food will we use to disguise the taste? And no, a spoonful of sugar is not it.

For most meds, our go to is a PBJ. It works well for the amoxi/clavamox or gabapetin. The med is stirred into the jelly and then spread on top the peanut butter and bread. When they open it the first thing the monkey does is to lick all the jelly off, then start eating the peanut butter. When they get down to the bread, the monks will hold it under their water lixit and get it nice and soaked before eating it. This is why meds are not put directly on the bread--well that and the bread does not cover the taste.

Their favorite fruit is a grape; we've successfully hidden small pieces of pills in a few grapes, but otherwise they're not very practical.
However there is one med that has been a challenge in the past and that's Baytril, it must be the world's most bitter substance. IYKYK!!
Thankfully, it's usually given for a short period of time. We've tried many combinations, one of which was ice cream and a dash of maple syrup. It covered up both smell and taste!! However, the all time winner was this combination of vanilla pudding, ensure, and powdered cheese(the kind you get from boxed mac and cheese). Worked like a charm for many days, the monks usually get over the (nauseating) combination about the same time the med is finished being given. Woo hoo!

Below are examples of the jelly cleaned off first, the picture with all the sandwiches on the tray, not all those are meds, they're mostly blanks. Molly needed some meds recently so her sandwich was loaded up then 3 more are made for the rest of her group, which they get apple sauce with their peanut butter
Distribution is fairly easy usually they're given out in pecking order.

We were going to market this video* as a relaxing, listen to nature, pretend you're in the high grass next to the tree line of the forest with the sound of a waterfall and bird songs.

Well, several reasons why this is not a smash hit:

Fan running in the background, geez sounds like a horde of angry wasps....what a relaxing thought, not!

The red shouldered hawk piercing throughout, claiming territory or alarming. Hmmmm, claiming territory or alarming....definitely soothing.

All that grass, it's like the rain has been on steroids!!

Then there's the "water fall" which is more like a tiny stream, but it IS a water sound!

And, lastly, Sally.
So, that whole hand, foot, foot, foot, hand rhythm thing. It's either hypnotic or causes some syndrome that will be hard to pronounce. Its 50/50.

*just kidding there is no video

Some of you may recall, several years back, KCR had a bat house installed. It took a few years for the bats to find us, and a few more years before we were the #1 food source of more than 400 bats.
As time went on, we began to hear little bat squibbles blooming into day long marathons.

Why?

They had finally built Batican City and quickly outgrew its perameters. 🙄

One phone call later to Lubee Bat Concervancy, we find out there was just enough room to add two more 400 - 450 occupancy houses and so we did!
It's been about two years since we added these new houses and we have begun to hear their squibbles yet again.

**sigh**

We love having the bats and especially love having not really seen a mosquito in many years. Now if we could get the bats to meet the flies!!

One of my favourite toys was a gift from the late iconic Anne Innis Dagg - The Woman Who Loved Giraffes❤️ Anne came to meet me once upon a time to give me this special giraffe ‘Star’ named after her favourite giraffe in South Africa ❤️🦒🐒🪽

Tell me without telling me, our monkey, Novia*, is in a gang.

She might even be the leader.

Don't let her innocent expression fool you, however, she can definitely take us.....run!

Actually it's white finger paint, Novia and her son Riley, were doing a little canvas art.

Thank you Sansei Shuri International Karate for the watermelons that were donated to the monkeys at KCR!

We purchssed a couple of the large melons for the monkeys as treats, AND to help the students earn money to cover tournament costs. When they learned the melons were for the monkeys they donated 8 more!!!

THANK YOU, truly awesome! We appreciate you taking the time to help us understand what to look for in picking out watermelons; you did a great job!

Below are some of the monkeys enjoying their sweet treats. The pictures also show the location and write up for the SSI watermelon stand. Thank you again to these caring individuals!
We hope you win big in July!!

When we told the monks the good news about being able to get both the A/C unit AND the much welcomed lift, they immediately went into party mode!

Emma naturally, is providing the music and dance!

Cory is enjoying some finger food while providing the party game of "blow on my tail and I'll tell you what you had for lunch."

Stay tuned for when they arrive and are put together!! Thank you, again!

Thank you, each and every one of you!! You did it! Your generosity allowed us to reach our $800.00 goal from all the platforms, AND that means we "qualified" for the $500.00 match!!

Our supporters are just awesome!

We didn't have any videos of the monks celebrating , because party decorations and monkeys apparently don't mix. So instead, we have a video of a friendly brawl between Clay (L) and Oliver (R with the missing hair on tail) who are fighting* over who will be the fastest in the new runway.
Our money is on Clay! He's tiny but he's quick, especially when he is going after someone he wishes to destroy. Oliver on the other hand is very food motivated and can practically fly, however, its short lived, he gets easily distracted.

Sorry Oliver.

*yes this really is play, even when Clay pulls Oliver's hair. Oliver is toothless but Clay is not, these 2 are BFF's
