After testifying today before the Senate and House committees on Veterans Affairs, National Commander Paul Shipley led AMVETS members to Senator Ron Johnson’s office. The senator from Wisconsin was the lone objection Tuesday that kept the Major Richard Star Act from advancing to a floor vote. AMVETS filled his office lobby, asking for an explanation from Sen. Johnson. His staff said he wasn’t available. Commander Shipley demanded a meeting with staff. Again, AMVETS’ request was refused. Executive Director Joe Chenelly told Johnson’s staff AMVETS would not leave until at least meeting with staff. We were informed Johnson’s office policy was to not allow for unscheduled meetings and civil disobedience (refusing to leave) was against Senate policy. AMVETS would not budge. Senator Johnson’s staff member purportedly responsible for veterans issues came out and agreed to meet with Commander Shipley. The explanation given was absurd and unacceptable. We were told the Senator may actually vote for the bill should it ever make it to an actual vote! But he single-handily stopped such a vote from happening.
