✨ A Little History & A Lot of Beauty ✨

One of the most breathtaking features of The Gahanna Sanctuary is our stunning Gothic Revival stained-glass windows. These windows aren’t just beautiful… they’re historic.

🪟 Who created them?

Our windows are attributed to the Von Gerichten brothers, Ludwig and Theodore—German immigrants who became well known for their stained-glass craftsmanship right here in Columbus, Ohio, before their work expanded beyond the region.

🎨 How were they made?

They used a special technique called “plating,” layering multiple pieces of glass in a single window to create deeper color, dimension, and richness. The glass itself was machine-made and most likely sourced from the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company in Indiana, which even verified sales to the Von Gerichten studio back in 1895.

💫 Why stained glass mattered (and still does)

In traditional Gothic church design, stained glass was more than decoration. It was meant to fill the space with mystical, colorful light and help tell Bible stories to congregations at a time when many people could not read.

Today, that same light still pours into The Sanctuary—creating an atmosphere that is peaceful, powerful, and truly unforgettable.
