Hello Isaias. Here’s what we expect: significant rain tomorrow, downed trees in some areas, some power outages, and possibly some localized flooding. We’ll be monitoring the storm and available. Today is a good day to prepare by making sure you aren’t out of fuel, ect. While it’s impossible to predict just what these storms will do, be prepared.

Tomorrow night at SCC-PSTC, start your path in technical rescue.

We had a great time at Wolfpack Mania Fall Festival! Community moments give us the opportunity to talk about fire prevention, hand out safety coloring books, and inspire a future generation. We get that meeting us for the first time in an emergency can be scary, so our junior firefighters do their best to make fire safety fun. Thanks Iotla Valley Elementary for the invite!

We burned off a couple of brush piles last night. We use these for wildland fire safety training. We get requests each year for assistance with large piles. We are able to assist with a few piles each year depending on weather and availability.

It’s not cold yet but it’s a great time to start preparing for cold weather.

If you’re burning wood this winter, ensuring your chimney is clean is a safe part of burning.
Use dry seasoned firewood.

Follow your manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and operating your stove, insert, or gas appliances.

Never use your oven or cooking appliances to heat your home. Don’t use your bathroom vent to heat your home.

And as always, if you think you have a chimney issue, smoke, or gas problem, call 911.

Two years ago, Hurricane Helene.

Before dawn our crews were out checking the district as creeks and rivers continued to rise. At daybreak power went out.

Downed trees blocked roads while firefighters and neighbors worked side by side, cutting trees and clearing roads for access and call response.

Swiftwater teams assisted residents affected by flooding. We searched for Jim Lau when his truck was swept away..

In the two years since, Cowee Volunteer Fire Rescue has worked to become even more prepared for the next emergency. We have strengthened our swiftwater rescue capabilities with two new rescue boats, along with additional equipment thanks to a grant. We have also added Starlink satellite internet at all five stations to help stay connected when traditional communications fail.

The hurricane track spared us much of the tragedy that others endured. Yet Helene taught us lessons and reminded us how quickly lives can change, and how much strength can be found when we work together.
