The task of creating the handwritten Declaration of Independence masterpiece fell to scribe Timothy Matlack. Before writing a single word, he had to carefully calculate the layout of all 1,337 words, leaving enough room at the bottom for dozens of signatures. Using a quill pen that held only a few words' worth of ink at a time, he painstakingly copied the text onto parchment. If he made a mistake, there was no eraser - he had to scrape the ink from the animal skin with a sharp blade and try again.
The printed Declaration spread the Revolution.
The handwritten Declaration preserved it.

We have a wonderful building in Washington DC that is used for many excellent purposes.

DAR National Headquarters and our historic DAR Constitution Hall are excited to welcome the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee May 26–29 as its new host venue. The building is already abuzz as talented spellers from across the country and around the world prepare to compete on our historic stage.

As DAR Constitution Hall hosts this nationally televised event and related Bee Week invitation-only activities, DAR National Headquarters, including the DAR Museum and DAR Library, will be closed to the public during this time.

Follow along and watch the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition from the stage of DAR Constitution Hall! Find how to watch here: https://spellingbee.com/watch

The NCDAR State Conference was such fun with the whimsical table decorations to the all colonial lady color guard. The education lunch is always well attended. Our chapter flag was displayed with the other NC Chapter flags.
