On this we celebrate the anniversary of the liberation of Ethiopia. On May 28, 1991, the Derg, a dictatorial military regime, was brought to an end and brought about a new era of freedom for all Ethiopians. The freedom won on this day 35 years ago paved the way for Marta and Deme to return to their home country, putting Project Mercy on the path toward integrated and holistic rural community development.
That includes the launch of our adult skills program, including our basket weaving initiative. For many years, women in Yetebon, Ethiopia performed the backbreaking task of harvesting firewood, carrying it down mountain paths for very little income. Our basket weaving program teaches these women how to use dyed grasses to create beautiful baskets. These artful pieces are available for purchase, with the proceeds helping these women secure incomes used to provide better living environments, school supplies, healthcare and nutrition.
