Saturday marks the third annual International Day for Women and Girls of African Descent, a day to honor the leadership, resilience, and impact of women across Africa and its diaspora. At Project Mercy, this legacy is personal. Our co-founder, Marta Gabre-Tsadick, paved the way as Ethiopia’s first female Senator. Today, her vision lives on in the women of Yetebon.

Through our Women’s Self-Help Groups, nearly 20 active groups of women are taking charge of their families’ futures, learning financial literacy, microsavings and sustainable agriculture techniques. Our 2025 Annual Report will detail how these groups are transforming those we serve. Click on the link in our bio to partner with us and empower three generations with a brighter future.

Happy ! While the US celebrates the dairy industry this June, did you know is using an American favorite to transform lives in rural ? We use high-yield Jersey cattle, America’s second-largest dairy breed, in our Dairy Cattle Breeding Program. By crossbreeding the Jersey with hardy indigenous cattle, we are creating a unique crossbreed that produces as much as 10 times the daily milk output of local breeds, improving for families. Small farming families sell their surplus at market, creating opportunities. By using local breeds, the cattle benefit from natural climate resistance, thriving in the local environment.

On this we celebrate the anniversary of the liberation of Ethiopia. On May 28, 1991, the Derg, a dictatorial military regime, was brought to an end and brought about a new era of freedom for all Ethiopians. The freedom won on this day 35 years ago paved the way for Marta and Deme to return to their home country, putting Project Mercy on the path toward integrated and holistic rural community development.
That includes the launch of our adult skills program, including our basket weaving initiative. For many years, women in Yetebon, Ethiopia performed the backbreaking task of harvesting firewood, carrying it down mountain paths for very little income. Our basket weaving program teaches these women how to use dyed grasses to create beautiful baskets. These artful pieces are available for purchase, with the proceeds helping these women secure incomes used to provide better living environments, school supplies, healthcare and nutrition.
Ready to bring a piece of Yetebon’s artistry into your home? https://project-mercy-inc.myshopify.com or visit our advancement office in Fort Wayne to see the new collection in person!
