The Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund extends its heartfelt thanks to the Roaring Fork Valley Horse Council for their generous donation and continued partnership. This support helps advance vital research at the Colorado State University's Johnson Equine Hospital aimed at uncovering the cause of equine colic and developing true preventive solutions.

As lifetime members of the Roaring Fork Valley Horse Council, we also applaud their tireless advocacy in creating and maintaining horse and hiker-only trails accessible for our horses. Thank you for your leadership, vision, and generosity.

The Colorado State University Galloway Equine Research Fund has secured $20,000 in funding to begin implementing microchips in client-owned horses undergoing colic surgery. This marks an important step forward in advancing equine colic research.

Our next phase—the leased horse research study—will take this work even further. To begin, we need to raise $100,000, and thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have already raised $29,000 toward this goal.

We are making meaningful progress—but we’re not there yet. If this work speaks to you, we invite you to be part of it. Every contribution helps move this critical research forward, bringing us closer to answers that can save horses’ lives.

For the first time, real science is underway to help find the cause and prevention of Equine Colic - but we cannot do it without your help.

Drs. Diana Hassel, Yvette Stephanie Nout-Lomas, Jenn Ruff and Lauren Eileen Smanik have received approval and funding from Colorado State University and are beginning implantation of microchips in client-owned horses, with owner approval, to study the equine GI tract and advance research into equine colic.

Our research seeks to move beyond traditional observation by gathering objective, internal data to improve outcomes for this condition.

The core of our current research involves the strategic implantation of specialized microchips during colic surgery. These microchips are utilized for tracking internal data of the GI tract post-implantation, providing researchers with real-time, high-precision insights that were previously unavailable.
