The school year is almost over and I am again saddened by the fact that I was not able to recruit more mentors. I have two females and three males waiting for a mentor. I realize that I need to be more aggressive in my recruiting techniques, but I don't want to be too pushy. For matches to work, the mentor has to be excited and committed.
Hesitations About Becoming a Mentor
“What do I have to offer a young person?” or “I’m too old/young/boring/etc.”
Students just want someone to listen to them and encourage them
We’re not trying to “fix” students, or to even “help” them. If you are able to show up and spend time with a student, you are a great
fit for our program.
Example:
A mentee saw her mentor for the first time after summer break and told her mentor “I can’t wait to tell you all the things I feel like I can’t tell my friends” because sometimes students are afraid to share hardships with their peers, but mentors are their safe space.
