Tremendous amounts of archaeological excavation have taken place at Ft. Atkinson State Historical Park beginning in the late 1950s and continuing, sporadically, to the present day. While the archaeological excavations formed the backbone for the reconstruction of parts of the fort, it is the Friends of Fort Atkinson (FOFA) who bring the buildings to life.

The FOFA is made up of dedicated living history volunteers and patrons who reenact the daily lives of soldiers and civilians at the fort during 6 weekends from May to October and the very popular candlelight tour in November.

You can find more information on their website: https://www.fortatkinsononline.org/

Plan a trip to Ft. Atkinson and see the fort come alive!

During work at the Sharpe Homestead in spring 2025, a black pipe was uncovered that had been run over a, partially dismantled, brick and concrete lined cistern. The pipe dates to after the cistern was no longer used and was of an interesting material.

After some research, we found the answers.

This pipe is called an Orangeburg pipe. Nearly all of this material was manufactured by the Orangeburg Pipe Company in Orangeburg, NY. This is a material made of bituminized wood pulp fiber.

Handling the pipe leaves a black residue on your hands and the cross section is very heterogenous as the layers of the fiber are visible. This material was commonly used for drain lines from 1945 to 1972 when it was rapidly replaced by ABS, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

This pipe offers a glimpse to a specific time and method of manufacture, telling us that water lines were changed at the site during the use of the Orangeburg Pipe.
