Orange Kitty - Update:

Here he is in his new favorite chair. The only time he gets down is to use the litter box or eat, lol.

Speaking of eating, Orange Kitty has had bouts of an upset tummy. This is a symptom of the FIP he is taking meds for, amongst a laundry list of other ones. For those who aren't familiar with FIP, it is the feline version of the coronia virus. Each treatment is 30 days long. It typically takes 3 treatments to kick it, and can leave permanent damage to organs and body systems it attacks. I keep anti-nausia meds on hand to help settle his tummy when needed, and baby food, for when he stops eating. Letting his tummy get empty creates the upset and gives him acid reflux. I have been giving him small meals throughout the day, to help with that. He still needs to gain weight, but with the upset tummy episodes, that is making it challenging.

"DENTIST" DAY, for Thunder!

Dr. Thomassen, of Nebraska Equine Veterinary Clinic floated Thunder's teeth today. He has been slobbering when he tries to eat, and has not been floated in 10+ years, if ever. As suspected, he had big "hooks and points" on his chewing teeth, making it very painful, if not inpossible to eat anything but grass and mash. His front top teeth are worn down to the gums and he was missing one. He should be feeling much better when he wakes up from his sedation.

Doc also noticed that he has a slight cresty neck, indicating that he might have a metabolic issue. Making him prone to developing laminitis. We will monitor him for this.

Next up on the checklist, is getting his hoofs trimmed. Again, many years since that has been done too. That is scheduled on the 1st of September.

Thunder is settling into his foster home quickly, and has sooo missed other horse friends and being around people. Getting used to LIVING again!

Thunder's Big Adventure!!

At 28 years old, Thunder started a new chapter in his life. He has spent the past 7+ years running on the farm he lived on. No vet, farrier, and very little human contact. He lost his pasture mate 2 years ago, and has been alone since. The kind folks next door gave him hay over the winter to keep him going. When I met him two weeks ago, he was starved for company, but a bit afraid at the same time.

I have been feeding him lunch and getting him used to human contact again, for the past two weeks. He has started to put back on some weight, but has a bit more to go. I have been wiping him down with fly spray while he eats. Talking to him, and petting him.

Today, when I came to take him to his foster home, it took him two tries, but he loaded on the trailer with no problem. I stood on the trailer, and gave him time to process what was going on. Acted as a matter of fact, and told him it was time to turn the page, and start a new life. He stepped up and stayed on. I hooked him up and gave him a treat. Last time he was on a trailer was 10 years ago.

When we arrived at his foster mom's place, he was excited to see everything! After he explored the dry lot and the barn area he would be eating in, I gave him lunch. As he ate, you could see him decompressing and relaxing. He was no longer on hyper alert, as he had been at his place. He ate slower and let foster mom Jani, pet him. We told him he was safe here. He was not worried about the dogs. He was settling in after only having been there for an hour! He will meet his new horse friends later this afternoon, but still have a private pen. Thunder is scheduled to see Dr. Thomassen on Thursday for a much needed teeth float and checkup.

Orange Kitty update:

TODAY was Orange Kitty's surgery at Arlington Pet Hospital. Before starting the procedure, Dr. Little did one more ultrasound to check on the condition of things. The tissue mass that the radiologist thought was a hernia, has shrunk in size! This shrinkage indicates that the tissue mass seen on the xrays and ultrasound is most likely not a hernia afterall, as hernias would not shrink. Dr. Little feels like the tissue that is swollen, is from his FIP condition, and that the medicine Orange Kitty has been taking to treat the FIP is working, therefore reducing the inflammation. His bloodwork also continues to show improvement. Doc did not feel like the surgery was necessary at this point, given the improvement. YAY!!!

Orange Kitty will be released from APH this afternoon. He will need 2 more months on the FIP meds ($212 each script), and will come back for a recheck and bloodwork to monitor progress. Your donations for Orange Kitty's surgery can now go toward today's visit, the followup visits, and continued medication. I will keep you all in the loop on Orange Kitty's piggie bank, and how your donations are helping his recovery from his FIP, and other issues.

Poor Goobs....

He was doing so good recovering from his foot abscess...until 2 days
ago.

He started to limp on that foot again. I pulled the wrap off of his foot. After cleaning out the bottom of his foot, I saw liquid coming out of a small hole along his toe. I pushed on his sole, and could hear a squishing noise and more liquid came out. Thought that was a good sign, that the abscess was draining so well. Usually once an abscess drains, it relieves the pressure and pain. Goober still isn't putting weight on his foot.

Left a message for Doc T at NEVC, To see what he thinks.

Will update everyone when Doc calls.

Two released from Sick Bay!

Smokey: he has continued to stay on his feet, since stopping the steroids and transitioning to Meloxicam. He is able to get up on his own now, and I can see his legs getting stronger. He will stay on Meloxicam going forward to manage his arthritis.

Goober: his abscess has finally opened and drained. He is baring weight on his foot again, and is not is pain. I am keeping a wrap on his foot, to keep it clean, until it finishes healing. Goobs was staying to himself, when he was not feeling well. He has rejoined his mom (Sally) and sister (Emmie).

*Fancy is still recooperating from her abscess, so she remains in Sick Bay.

*Orange Kitty will continue to be in Sick Bay, as he is still battling FIP and taking medication. He is showing signs of improvement with his appetite and energy. His surgery is scheduled for the 20th.
