The Nebraska Horse Trails Committee, Inc.

The Nebraska Horse Trails Committee, Inc. Now a non-profit 501c3 organization, we are not just talk, but action! We invite you to join us on our Mission.

The Nebraska Horse Trails Committee, a committee of the Nebraska Horse Council formed in August of 2000 to unite, educate and represent the equestrian community for the promotion, improvement and development of Nebraska trails for all horse users. The Nebraska Horse Trails Committee was formed in 2000 by avid trail riders who recognized the need for an organized group to work with state land manag

ement and supervisors to keep or develop horse trails on our public land. This group is about clearing trails, negotiating new trails and improving trail heads and horse camps. Many hours of sweat and a lot of heart has gone into the trails that we all enjoy and love. OUR MISSION STATEMENT

To preserve and maintain horse trails and natural resources in Nebraska to be enjoyed today and futuregenerations

To conserve and promote enjoyment of the horse trail use throughout Nebraska’s diverse and scenic landscape

To create opportunities for the education and cooperation of all trail users and land owners of the issues of involving horses in the natural environment

Memorial day morning, volunteers from the Nebraska Horse Trails Committee worked to clear the last remaining trail blockage from the 2025 tornado that went through the Lake Cunningham trail system. Seven hours of sawing, throwing logs and brush to open up 200 yards of trail. This trail section is located on the north end of the Cathedral trail. The trail is not open yet, but soon. We ran out of gas, and I'm not referring to chainsaw gas. We hope you were able to ride this weekend.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Freedom is never free. From all of us at NHTC, we express our deepest gratitude to the fallen heroes who gave everything so we can enjoy our liberties.

Supporting Volunteers That Support Trails

The Peckerneck Trail System, located on the south side of Harlan County Lake near Alma NE is maintained by volunteers. The Nebraska Horse Trails Committee has financially supported the volunteers almost from the trail’s inception. Our support over the years has made it possible to purchase and maintain mowing equipment and maintenance of personal equipment that is used to make these trails possible. I have no doubt that without this support and locals that maintain the trail, it would not exist.

Most recently the Committee voted to fund the purchase of an electric tree and brush trimmer to maintain the trail system. This compact saw can easily be carried in the tool compartment of the UTV that is used to pull the mower. This tool was specifically purchased to remove the occasional tree limb and brush that are inhibiting the enjoyment of the trail by riders like you.

We at the NHTC are here to support motivated people and groups that have a desire to make the horse trails of Nebraska better for all of us!

We would like to thank Justin Snyder for leading the charge of maintaining the Peckerneck Trail!

On April 29th the Nebraska Horse Trails Committee Chairman, Mike Anderson along with Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Summit Lake SRA Park Superintendent, Jordan Swenson, and Amanda Trudell of Pony Tale Media attended the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities 2026 Conference in Burt County Nebraska.

We were asked to lead a breakout session explaining how local volunteer groups can work with area land managers to improve the outdoor experience for everyone.

The title of our session was: Partnering with the Great Outdoors.

The description was: Summit Lake SRA in Tekamah has better utilized its landscape to serve a broader range of outdoor enthusiasts. Starting with a small group of horse trail advocates, the trail use at Summit Lake has increased exponentially by hoof and foot–ultimately bringing in new business to the park and its local community. Hear how they did it and learn what it means to put “your skin in the game” when it comes to better enjoying the great outdoors.

We at the NHTC would like to thank those that attended the session along with the organizers of the event for asking us to present.

P.S. As we gave our presentation with windows facing main street Tekamah, we pointed out to those attending the horse trailers driving by on their way to a beautiful Wednesday night ride at Summit Lake.
