Understanding Low Strength Concrete Through NDT

The ACI Greater Michigan Chapter, together with our meeting sponsor, SME, invite you to join us November 10, 2026, for a presentation that will examine the evaluation of potentially deficient, low-strength concrete through a project case study. Emphasis is placed on relevant ACI Guides, specifically ACI 228.1R-19, Report on Methods for Estimating In-Place Concrete Strength, and ASTMs and their applicability to concrete test data, field observations, nondestructive testing, and laboratory analysis.

Speaker: Shayne Giordano, PE
Shayne is a Senior Project Engineer in SME’s Building Materials Group. He has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Western Michigan University and is pursuing a M.S.C.E. in structural engineering from Michigan Technological University. He has been practicing engineering for 12 years and serves on ICRI’s Michigan Chapter board, where he served as President in 2025.
Shayne works as a team leader in SME’s Materials Group, conducting forensic investigations and structural assessments for flooring.

This year’s event will feature the Magic Soiree, a renowned comedy and magic group. The fun starts when we are shown to our tables in the beautiful Atrium of the Embassy Suites.

While enjoying our social hour and a fabulous dinner, close-up magic will be happening at your table with a roving magician. Following dinner we will move into the Maple room, an intimate theater for an evening of astonishing illusions and hilarious entertainment. This incredible stage show is guaranteed to leave you mesmerized!

We will have a short update on the chapter activities prior to the show.

A huge thank you to Icaro Mariani, P. Eng, M. Sc., Director, Customer and Engineering Success at Giatec Scientific, for an outstanding presentation on “Innovations in Monitoring In-Situ Concrete Properties.” 👏 And thank you Giatec Scientific for sponsoring tonight's event.

Icaro shared valuable insights into in-situ monitoring technologies available on the market today at different stages of adoption, with a focus on temperature, strength, set time, resistivity, relative humidity and corrosion activity, along with other emerging measurements, and discusses how this data can support better quality control and durability decisions.

And, of course, the evening was about more than just learning — the food was fantastic, the networking was phenomenal, and the conversations were even better! 🤝

Innovations in Monitoring In-Situ Concrete Properties

Some concrete testing methods were developed up to a century ago for a much simpler material and very different site requirements, and no longer fully reflect the needs of the industry. At the same time, advances in both materials and sensing technology now allow far more information to be captured directly from the concrete in place, across its full life cycle. This session presents in-situ monitoring technologies available on the market today at different stages of adoption, with a focus on temperature, strength, set time, resistivity, relative humidity and corrosion activity, along with other emerging measurements, and discusses how this data can support better quality control and durability decisions.

Speaker: Sarah De Carufel is a Product Manager and Product Owner at Giatec Scientific, with over ten years in the concrete industry. Her work has consistently focused on bridging the gap between technological concepts and their implementation in the market, with a strong emphasis on usability. She has led products spanning the full concrete life cycle, from mix design and in-transit monitoring to in-situ sensing and hardened concrete assessment. Sarah is a member of ACI Committees 304, 207,135 and a voting member of ACI 306. She holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Ottawa, where her graduate research focused on ultra-high performance concrete.

The beverage setup is the same as last year: instead of having an open bar before and after the course plus a few drink tickets while you're on the course, we'll use tickets all day. Each golfer will receive six (6) tickets upon registration. We don't recommend drinking that many hard beverages in quick succession (indeed the tickets work for soft drinks too), but in case you need more after you get off the course, just find Dan Ziemba or Beth Taylor and we'll find an extra one somewhere!
