At Equipment and Tool Institute ToolTech, yesterday’s shop owner panel focused on what it really takes to keep pace with today’s vehicles, from tool access to technician development.

Shops are relying on a mix of OEM and aftermarket tools, with the aftermarket often stepping in quickly to fill gaps. When tools aren’t readily available, many are getting creative to keep repairs moving.

The bigger challenge continues to be technicians. Recruiting remains difficult, but shops investing in ongoing, paid training are seeing stronger retention and engagement.

There was also a clear divide in scale. Larger operations are better positioned to share tools and resources across locations, while smaller shops are feeling increased pressure to keep up.

From tool access to technician development, one thing is clear: standing still isn’t an option!
