Concrete placed beneath the waterline does not forgive guesswork. At the 2026 Concrete Innovation Forum, Peter Faust’s Technology Showcase, “Tremie Concrete and Best Practices for Deep Foundations,” highlights how the industry is replacing assumption with insight.

His presentation traces the EFFC/DFI Guide to Tremie Concrete and its next leap forward: advanced numerical modeling that reveals how concrete truly flows deep under water. Data, not assumption, now guides best practice.

His session is one of several Technology Showcases and presentations featured at the forum, alongside discussions on topics ranging from data centers and nuclear power plant construction to greener concrete, embedded sensor technology, and new methodologies creating greater value for owners.

Another great episode of ACI’s “Engineering Greatness” podcast featuring Aakriti Khadka, a recent PhD graduate from North Carolina State University, and Tara Cavalline, PhD, PE, of UNC Charlotte.

Aakriti was the 2024–2025 recipient of the JoAnne K. & Cecil L. Jones Carolinas Fellowship. In the episode she shares how that fellowship launched her ACI journey by taking her to her first ACI Concrete Convention and connecting her with the mentorship and community that shaped her path.

If you are already planning to submit a proposal for the major update to ACI 347.3R-13, Guide to Formed Concrete Surfaces, please be advised that the deadline is this Monday.

The ACI Foundation is seeking proposals for a global literature search to identify technologies and methodologies for quantitatively assessing Surface Void Ratio and Color Uniformity on formed concrete surfaces. Submissions should address:

• The science behind each proposed method
• Confirmation of its current use on concrete surfaces
• Prioritization based on accuracy, speed, and field applicability

The ACI Foundation, in partnership with the ACI Kansas Chapter, is proud to announce the new Mike and Donna Murray Scholarship.

Mike Murray began his career as a concrete finisher in 1964 and went on to found two successful Kansas City businesses with his wife, Donna. Together, they were active ACI contributors at the local and national level for decades. They also co-founded Concrete Cares, a nonprofit supporting families affected by cancer. Their leadership, generosity, and commitment to the concrete profession have left a lasting mark on the industry and their community.

The scholarship will award $5,000 to students pursuing degrees in concrete-related fields, ensuring the Murrays' legacy lives on through the next generation of industry professionals.

Last week our Assistant Director, Tricia G. Ladely, took part in NLR’s Cement and Concrete Industry Annual Meeting in Golden, CO. While there, she also had the chance to tour the USBR Research & Development Center and see firsthand the innovation shaping our industry.

Pictured with Tricia is Katelyn O’Quinn, a civil engineer at USBR and the 2018–2019 Cagley Student Fellowship awardee. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do. Seeing former fellowship recipients grow into leaders and continue making a real difference in the industry is both inspiring and deeply rewarding.

Thank you to NLR and USBR for the warm hospitality and the opportunity to connect, share ideas, and learn together.

Today, individuals from all around the world will take action to raise awareness and bring about meaningful change to protect our environment.

The ACI Foundation continues to take steps in supporting long-term sustainability in the concrete industry. Several of its funded research projects are directly contributing to a more responsible and resilient built environment:

• Supporting the use of natural pozzolans as cement replacements, which can reduce a mixture's carbon footprint by up to 50%
• Providing guidance on the use of recycled concrete aggregate in new construction
• Advancing green concrete mixtures and supplementary cementitious materials that reduce reliance on traditional portland cement
• Developing tools for environmental product declarations and global warming potential benchmarking
• Exploring the use of seawater and alternative aggregates with non-corrosive reinforcement to make better use of available resources
• Promoting more durable concrete that extends the service life of structures and reduces long-term material waste

These efforts reflect a shared understanding that sustainability in the built environment begins with better materials, better guidance, and better research.

The ACI Foundation will continue to support and sponsor positive efforts in building a more sustainable concrete industry.
