Umoja Inc. College Tour = SUCCESS 🎓

This week we took 75 students from multiple high schools and a middle school to visit Minnesota State University Moorhead.

The energy was real.
The laughter was loud.
The conversations were meaningful.

For many of our students, this was their first time stepping onto a college campus—and moments like that matter.

With opportunities like free tuition for Minnesota residents and discounted tuition for North Dakota students, the path to college is becoming more real and more reachable.

This is what Umoja is about:
Creating access.
Building confidence.
Expanding what students believe is possible.

Grateful for every student, every staff member, and every moment.

More tours. More exposure. More impact.

This week wasn’t just a lesson, it was culture, community, and connection. Being in North Dakota, bringing Indigenous food into the space means something. Tees Tacos shared the only fry bread from downtown Fargo and the students felt it. Conversations got deeper, energy got stronger. Huge shout out to senior Elijah for showing leadership in the room.

One of the easiest assignments of the semester is often the most challenging. We ask students to create their own brand. Most of them feel confident when they are working alone because the brand reflects their personal ideas, passions, and identity. But then we shift the assignment. We ask them to partner with someone else and collaborate.

That is when the real learning begins.

If one student is building a brand around animal rights and another is focused on wrestling, they have to pause and ask deeper questions. What values exist in both brands? What do they actually care about underneath the surface? Discipline. Protection. Strength. Loyalty. Advocacy. Once they identify those shared values, they begin building something new together.

This week at Moorhead High, students learned that collaboration is not about abandoning your vision. It is about extracting the deeper values inside your vision and finding where it connects with someone else’s. When that happens, creativity expands and the work becomes stronger than either idea on its own.

Umoja Inc. was honored to kick off the week with a fireside chat at .

Our founder, Fred Edwards, had the opportunity to share reflections and conversation with an incredibly energetic and thoughtful team. The passion in the room for community impact was powerful to witness.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity and are excited about the growing partnership between Umoja Inc. and United Way of Cass Clay. Conversations like this remind us what is possible when organizations come together with a shared vision for youth and community.

This year in Umoja, we’re doing writing profiles.
That means students aren’t just writing what people see — they’re digging into what people assume, what they project, and what gets used against them.

Listen to Joy.
She names the double standards.
She calls out the people who weaponize her name.
She refuses to let anyone decide who she is just because of how she shows up.

This poem speaks volumes.

If you felt this, type “Joy 8” in the comments

They asked us to write about double standards… about what adults don’t always understand.
At Umoja, we’re taught to speak honestly about our lives and Husna did exactly that.
This is one of her strongest poems so far.

“ate” if it hit.
“RL8” if it’s real life for you too.

Enock came back as our guest speaker to talk about the power of 10,000 hours—and what it means to sit in the same seats he once did.
Same classrooms. Same starting point. Different chapter.
