For four years, we’ve had the privilege of watching Minou grow, find her voice, build confidence, and become part of the Umoja family.

From freshman year all the way to graduation, she has been with us. Now, she’s stepping into her next chapter: college.

Before she goes, we asked Minou to share what her experience with Umoja has meant to her.

This is why we do what we do. It’s bigger than a program. It’s about walking alongside young people long enough to watch them become who they’re meant to be.

Why Every Middle School Needs Umoja.

Alexandra Koebell served as our instructional support partner while working full-time with Fargo Public Schools. She was present in our classrooms, witnessed the growth of our students firsthand, and experienced the impact of the Umoja model every week.

Take a moment to listen as Alexandra shares why programs like Umoja matter and the difference they can make in middle schools. She highlights elements that are not often seen in traditional classroom settings; spaces where students can build confidence while connecting that growth to meaningful academic components. Her perspective reflects what we have seen for years: when students are given opportunities to be seen, heard, and challenged, they thrive.

Umoja Inc. College Tour = SUCCESS 🎓

This week we took 75 students from multiple high schools and a middle school to visit Minnesota State University Moorhead.

The energy was real.
The laughter was loud.
The conversations were meaningful.

For many of our students, this was their first time stepping onto a college campus—and moments like that matter.

With opportunities like free tuition for Minnesota residents and discounted tuition for North Dakota students, the path to college is becoming more real and more reachable.

This is what Umoja is about:
Creating access.
Building confidence.
Expanding what students believe is possible.

Grateful for every student, every staff member, and every moment.

More tours. More exposure. More impact.

This week wasn’t just a lesson, it was culture, community, and connection. Being in North Dakota, bringing Indigenous food into the space means something. Tees Tacos shared the only fry bread from downtown Fargo and the students felt it. Conversations got deeper, energy got stronger. Huge shout out to senior Elijah for showing leadership in the room.
