Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is underway, and we need your help! This year, Rise hopes to distribute 1,000 Thanksgiving Food Baskets to local families so they can enjoy a holiday meal filled with comfort, connection, and gratitude.

It’s always exciting when a bill goes for a full Assembly or Senate vote, having gone through this process before, one really appreciates the amount of work it takes to reach this point. The following two bills are scheduled for the full Assembly vote this Thursday, 10/29/26. Congratulations to the prime sponsors Assemblywoman Melinda Kane and Assemblywoman Shama Haider. We anticipate they will pass. Once their Senate counterpart bills pass, these bills can be signed into law by the Governor.

Bill A1646 sets a deadline for the Commissionerof Education to review audits of private schoolsserving students with disabilities and issue anyfindings, adjustments, or penalties. It requiresthe Commissioner to act within seven yearsof an audit’s submission. For older audits,the deadline is seven years after submissionor three years after the bill takes effect,whichever is later. This bill aims to reducelong delays, provide financial certainty forschools and school districts, and give schoolsa fair opportunity to challenge audit findings. https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/bill-search/2026/A1646

Bill A2054 expands family support and respitecare services for individuals under 21 withdevelopmental disabilities. It requires theDivision of Children’s System of Care toauthorize respite care for 12 months instead ofevery 90 days, provide separate respite carehours based on the needs of the individualand their family, and review services annuallyrather than requiring families to reapply eachyear. As the federal government pulls back protections, New Jersey advocates say state legislation is more urgent than ever.

We don’t ban doors or locks out of fear that these average necessities, found in most residential and business settings, might simulate being locked up in an institution. The reluctance to protect people with disabilities from abuse, neglect, injuries, and death within state licensed placements, in the name of preserving privacy, is perverse. Protective advocacy groups created to protect the rights of people with disabilities must carefully examine the true reasons why they have failed, and continue to fail to protect this population from harm. Cameras save lives, preserve dignity, and secure justice, at a reasonable expense considering the benefits and the state funding these agencies receive.
