Alexis de Tocqueville had come to America to study its prisons, not its cruelty, when he stopped in Memphis in December 1831.

Ice choked the Mississippi that winter, and on its banks he found a column of Choctaw families waiting to cross.

They carried almost nothing, no tents, no wagons, only what they could bear in their arms.

The wounded, the newborn, and the dying all stood together in the freezing cold.

Tocqueville watched as they filed toward the boats without a single cry or sob, a silence he never forgot.

Left behind on the bank were the dogs that had traveled with them the whole way.

As the boats pulled away, the dogs set up a dismal howl that carried across the water.

Then, one after another, they plunged into the icy Mississippi and swam after the people they belonged to.

Tocqueville, the aristocrat who had come to admire American democracy, wrote down the scene almost in spite of himself.

He called what he witnessed the expulsion, in the midst of civilization and, so to speak, in sight of Europe, of an entire people.

Tocqueville had traveled to America to praise its institutions, and instead he left Memphis with a scene he could not reconcile with anything he believed about liberty.

He never forgot the sound of those dogs howling across the ice, and neither, once he wrote it down, could his readers.

AI consumes as much water as the world’s bottled water industry.

A new analysis of artificial intelligence’s environmental footprint suggests that training and running models such as ChatGPT may already consume more water each year than humans drink from bottled water worldwide.

After combining estimated data center cooling needs with the largely opaque water-use data big tech companies choose to disclose, de Vries-Gao concludes that AI operations likely consume between 312.5 billion and 764.6 billion liters of water per year—bracketing and potentially surpassing the 446 billion liters of bottled water people drink globally.

These figures exclude the substantial “embodied” water required to manufacture AI chips and hardware, prompting UC Riverside researcher Shaolei Ren to argue that the real total is even higher and that earlier projections were too conservative.
