The Washington State Council of County and City Employees, (WSCCCE) Council 2, AFSCME, AFL-CIO represents more than 16,000 employees who provide services to the citizens of Washington state. It is a democratic union providing a real voice for its members through active participation and professional representation. Since our last update on the Spokane County budget deficit, Spokane County has passed a criminal justice sales tax. While it will save many worker's jobs, there's still more work to do.

At the last Spokane County budget roundtable, members spoke about the impacts layoffs will leave behind. There are other options. Delaying projects, strategic use of vacancies, voluntary early retirement incentives, and temporary furloughs can all be used to help the people that keep the county running every day.

During the Council 2 President’s Conference, Council 2 President/Executive Director Michael Rainey shared his vision for an organized, active, and member-led union.

“Culture change doesn’t happen with a flyer, it doesn’t happen with me sitting up here talking at a podium. It happens one conversation at a time. One leader, one worksite, one local at a time.”

It was fantastic seeing local presidents throughout the state connect with each other to find solutions to their common challenges. Thanks for the great turnout!

Over in Port Angeles, Local 1619 ran a booth at the city's benefits fair! They handed out copies of their contract and created a wonderful summary of the benefits within. AFSCME members also receive a $10,000 life insurance benefit and discounts on everyday expenses through AFSCME Advantage.

Another newspaper clip from the folder Council 2 Staff found while cleaning the office in Yakima.

This one, from the Yakima Herald in 1998, was a profile on Annette Fordyce, a parking enforcement officer in Yakima doing her (Thankless) job. Prior to working for the city, she was a professional wrestler who toured with the women's circuit. She was quoted in the article saying, "I'm not hard on the people, I'm a hard worker."

We couldn't 100% confirm she was an AFSCME member besides the fact that a Council 2 staff member saved the newspaper clipping all those years ago, but she reminded us of all our members that do their (Thankless) jobs for the benefit of their cities and counties every day.

Electric Rose Tattoo hosted a tattoo flash fundraiser for the Yes For Libraries Campaign during Olympia Arts Walk over the weekend.

We loved seeing Timberland Library Workers and some folks from AFSCME Council 28 WFSE there.

AFSCME Council 2 asks Michael Walker from IAFF Local 29 to withdraw his statements about the qualifications of dispatchers and wants to make it abundantly clear that SREC dispatchers in bargaining units 1553-EC and 1553-ES are highly qualified for their positions, exceeding statewide standards for their profession.

Everett City Council is meeting tomorrow! If you haven't already, take a second to sign our letter to council telling them to listen to transit workers as they consider options to grow Everett's transit system.

Transit employees want to continue working for the city so they don't have to move their work location, modify their reporting structure, face changes to their benefits and schedule, or lose the seniority they've spent years earning.

For those who haven’t heard, Spokane County’s draft budget cuts up to 10% of employees working for the County, and we’re planning to gather at their Budget Roundtable on 9/22 to tell them cuts will damage the community.
