October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We’re sharing motivations from YWCA Evanston/North Shore advocates on why awareness matters and why it should matter to us all.

Senior Director of Program Strategy, Kristin Drake, shared:

"Too often, people suffer in silence, believing they have nowhere to turn. Raising awareness helps connect individuals and families to support, resources, and a community that cares about their safety and well-being.�

It also matters because domestic violence is not an isolated issue. It impacts individuals, families, and entire communities. By bringing attention to it, we challenge stigma, encourage conversations, and bring light to the prevalence of this issue. Lasting change will only happen when we work together, collectively addressing the root causes of violence and creating communities where everyone can live free from fear and harm. "

The traditions and practices of Indigenous nations are sacred to this land. This we honor the perspectives, teachings, and ongoing contributions of Native peoples and stand in solidarity against the continued legacy of discrimination, marginalization, and violence perpetuated against communities.

We are joining our YWCA sisters across the nation and the globe today, , to call attention to the problem of child marriage – which significantly increases the risk of experiencing domestic violence and decreases access to education and healthcare - here in the United States.

Our state elected leaders can stop this practice in its tracks: Today, 17 states prohibit marriage under the age of 18 without exceptions for parental permission, pregnancy, or court approval. 17 is not enough. We can and must do better for our nation’s girls.

❓ What if the biggest barrier to seeking help isn’t a lack of resources—but the cultural, family, or systemic factors that can make reaching out feel impossible?

Join us for Domestic Violence Awareness: Moving From Awareness to Action, an insightful presentation exploring how cultural norms, family and faith expectations, immigration status, language access, and stigma can shape a survivor’s experience and ability to seek support.

Together, we’ll explore how to move beyond awareness and toward cultural humility, survivor-led support, and meaningful action. Participants will learn practical ways to respond without judgment, recognize barriers to help-seeking, and connect survivors with appropriate resources. 💜
