We had an amazing little story written up about DachSand.
Seaside is about to have a wiener problem. More than 400 dachshunds are expected to take over the Oregon Coast this weekend for the seventh annual DachSand, and somehow the dog count is not even the most ridiculous part.
They added a Longest Weener contest this year.
I have questions.
DachSand runs Sept. 11–13 and is Doxies of PNW’s biggest annual fundraiser. Saturday is the main event on the beach across from the Seaside Aquarium, with the giant group photo at noon and the full beach takeover starting at 12:30.
Then from 3–5 p.m. the serious athletic competition begins:
Longest Weener.
Doxie Derby.
Costume contests.
The derby is capped at 150 dogs, which feels like an important number to know before arriving with a dachshund who has been training their entire life for this moment.
At 6 p.m. everyone takes their dogs downtown to walk around, shop and eat. The organizers make a very specific point that this is not a parade.
Apparently several hundred dachshunds wandering through downtown Seaside together does not require an official parade designation.
Friday starts with a kickoff at Ruby’s and a beach we**ie roast near the Turnaround.
Sunday starts with a 9 a.m. beach walk, and then at 11 the dachshunds head to the Seaside Aquarium, where the current schedule says each doxie gets one free tray of fish to feed the seals.
Anyone can come, dachshund or not.
And if you’re making a weekend of it, several Seaside hotels are offering DachSand group rates and waived or reduced pet fees.
The organizers warn that times can change, so check the current DachSand schedule before heading out.
I personally need to witness the Longest Weener judging process because there are some journalistic questions that simply cannot remain unanswered.
