Your child has reached Olympic levels of nursing gymnastics, able to nurse in any position.’

Many new parents wonder if they will ever be able to leave the house again because their baby needs a very specific setup to feed. When nursing is established, we often look back at these early days and laugh.

Some babies need extra milk – known as 'supplements' or 'top ups', as well as, or instead of, direct breastfeeding. This new article from LLLGB because Breastfeeding Matters is all about how and when you could explore reducing supplements.

Just like breastfeeding, reducing supplements is an art. You need plenty of patience, and good support. Whatever feeding looks like for you, we’re here to help.

“As my baby gets bigger (more than a year), I feel like I’m constantly pushing her hands away from “twiddling” my other ni**le. I know it is a natural instinct to massage and rub to help with letdown, but she is much stronger now, and my ni**les are sensitive – it just doesn’t feel good. But I feel a bit sad that I’m refusing her efforts to touch. How do other mothers handle this?”

Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it comes easily
Breastfeeding is learned, for both babies and parents.
It can take time, support, and a lot of patience.

If it feels hard, you’re not doing it wrong.
You’re learning something new together.

Just as a toddler learning to walk sometimes needs a hand, a mom and baby learning to breastfeed might need a hand. International Doula Institute

It would be remiss not to acknowledge the many barriers to successful breastfeeding that exist in our country. Many families come to us grieving the experience they had hoped for, while they prepare for a new breastfeeding journey. We look forward to a future where everyone who wants to breastfeed is fully supported and able to do so. Until then, we remain here, continuing to support families while advocating for change.

Your baby's milk intake will change & fluctuate during periods of rapid growth - often referred to as growth spurts or "leaps".

During periods of very frequent feeding or cluster feeding, many mothers & parents wonder whether their little one is getting enough milk.

You can find good guidelines to look out for in the article linked below:

Nursing into toddlerhood can provide so many benefits, often with less demand or concerns about milk supply. As they begin eating and drinking on their own, nursing becomes more about connection, emotional regulation, and comfort—while still offering important health benefits for both of you!

Nursing now is not just food and drink, but communication and connection, comfort and pain relief." -The Art of Breastfeeding; The LLL USA logo is in the lower left corner.]
