Vancouver Symphony's concerts this weekend feature harpist Cristina Montes Mateo performing a concerto by the Catalan composer Xavier Montsalvatge. It's seldom heard here in the states, and includes a number of interesting effects (first time I've heard of the harpist needing a spoon!). If you can't make it up to Vancouver, there is also an option to stream the concert -- see the Vancouver Symphony website for details.

There is a great opportunity to hear harp music from University of Oregon this Sunday, March 16th - see announcement from University of Oregon Harp Instructor Mary DeMocker below!

Sunday March 16th, 3:00 pm
Berwick Hall, 975 E 18th Avenue, Eugene
FREE

Students will open with solo compositions by Debussy, Hasselmans, Minkus, Woods, and Andrès.
Students are especially excited to share our Adungu and Pedal Harp Collaboration: Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Education Dr. Kyakuwa, a Ugandan Mutooro, will lead an interactive performance of the traditional Rutooro folk song Twaara Amata Gaawe (“Have Your Milk”) featuring pedal harps, voice, and the Adungu—an arched harp native to Uganda and found in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both the Adungu and pedal harp symbolize unity, peace, and communal values. The song reflects the Batooro people's rich cultural heritage, emphasizing hospitality, responsibility, respect, and identity.

There are two orchestra concerts coming up in Eugene in the next few weeks with some prominent harp.

#1 -- University of Oregon Symphony, Tuesday, March 11, 7:30 pm, Soreng Concert Hall at the Hult

Along with Mozart's Overture to the Magic Flute and Liszt's Piano Concerto # 1, the program also includes Shostakovich's Symphony # 5, with a small but prominent presence from the harp. Laura Zaerr and Jeff Parsons will be playing. Tickets range from $5 to $25.

# 2 -- Eugene Symphony, Thursday, March 20, 7:30 pm, Silva Concert Hall at the Hult

The program includes John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine and a contemporary piece commissioned by the orchestra, Three Scales of Interconnection. The big harp piece, though, is Gustav Holst's The Planets, with Jane Allen and Laura Zaerr playing the big harp parts. Tickets range from $10 to $74.

Spring into action with John Adams’ kinetic showpiece Short Ride in a Fast Machine, evoking an exhilarating ride in a Lamborghini and launching us into orbit for Gustav Holst's The Planets.

Harpist Leslie McMichael and her sister Barbara (viola) will be performing a live score (composed by Leslie as well) for the silent film "Snow White" (not the Disney one!) at a screening up in Portland on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 3 pm at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St.). Admission is $15.

Snow White is as closely connected to the Disney empire as Mickey Mouse, but Walt was actually inspired to animate the German fairy tale after seeing a live-action version as a teen. Before Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot premiere their own controversy-mired live-action version in March, relive the magi...
