Three local convenience stores are saving energy, lowering operating costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions thanks to a pilot project led by the City of Eugene and BRING.

Upgrades like replacing old freezers, switching to low-impact refrigerants and repairing equipment added up to big savings:

- 40,000 kWh of electricity saved annually
- 23.28 metric tons of emissions reduced – the equivalent of driving from New York to LA 25 times
- Nearly $4,000 in energy cost savings for local businesses annually

With a $9,200 grant from the Urban Sustainability Directors Network and another $6,800 in rebates from EWEB and green business grants, the project helped businesses turn nearly $16,000 into direct improvements.

The project was a win for local businesses, a win for the climate and a win for Eugene! Learn more about the story in our newsroom: https://www.eugene-or.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/7542

We are gearing up for another great year of waste prevention and sustainability education!

Are you a teacher interested in bringing hands-on environmental education to your students? BRING offers free classroom lessons and field trips for K–12 students throughout Lane County.

Our programs explore topics like waste prevention, recycling, composting, reuse, and the circular economy—helping students understand where our stuff comes from, where it goes, and how they can make a difference.

Teachers can choose from interactive classroom lessons or field trips to local waste and reuse facilities, including BRING, the Glenwood Transfer Station, and Short Mountain Landfill.

Start planning for the school year and get your class on our schedule! Email [email protected] to schedule.

The BRING Waste Prevention Education Program is a free program for K-12 Lane County students and schools offered by BRING and Lane County Waste Management. Between Jan. 1 and March 31 of this year, the program generated some impressive results, including:

• Opened registration for BRING’s Student Product Design Challenge and received 44 registrations.

• BRING’s Waste Prevention Education Coordinator taught 53 classroom lessons and led 10 tours of Lane County’s waste management facilities to 1252 students across 8 districts.

• BRING’s education team provided a tour and a hands-on Rocket Stove demonstration with Kalapuya High School.

• BRING’s education team worked closely with an intern from the The Academy of Arts and Academics to create a replica, to scale, diorama of BRING’s Planet Improvement Center.

• Led tours of BRING’s Planet Improvement Center for the University of Oregon’s English Language Learning Program, as well as the Lane County Master Recyclers cohort.

• BRING’s educator attended the annual Farm to School Conference in Corvallis.
