Today marks five years since the conclusion of the war in Afghanistan and the final withdrawal of U.S. forces on August 30, 2021.

For those who served there, and for the families who carried the burden at home, Afghanistan is more than a chapter in a history book. It represents twenty years of deployments, sacrifice, friendships, loss, and service to our nation.

We remember the Americans who never came home, those who returned carrying visible and invisible wounds, and the Gold Star families who continue to live with their loss every day.

To every Afghanistan Veteran: your service mattered. Your sacrifice mattered. The men and women who stood beside you mattered.

On this fifth anniversary, Cameron Ponder VFW Post 12237 remembers and honors all who served in Afghanistan.

We will not forget.

It is with a heavy heart that Cameron Ponder VFW Post 12237 announces the passing of our fellow Veteran and Comrade, Scott Robert Zimmerman, who passed away Tuesday night.

Scott was a Navy Veteran, a member of our Post, and a member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, where he was known as “Spare Parts.” He was also a devoted Notre Dame fan. Scott was part of several communities, but they were all connected by the same bonds of service, brotherhood, and friendship.

This is the second loss our Post has suffered in such a short time, and our hearts are heavy. Please keep Scott’s family, friends, fellow VFW members, and CVMA brothers and sisters in your thoughts and prayers.

His viewing, funeral, and burial arrangements are included below. VFW members attending are respectfully asked to wear their VFW lid as we gather to support his family and render our final respects.

Fair winds and following seas, Comrade Zimmerman. We have the watch.

It is with profound sadness that Cameron Ponder VFW Post 12237 announces the passing of our dear friend and chartered Life Member, Carey T. “C.T.” Christie, who passed away on Saturday, August 1.

There is simply no way to adequately summarize everything C.T. did for Veterans or for this community. He was one of the most caring and selfless Veterans many of us have ever known. If a Veteran or Veterans organization needed help, C.T. was there. It did not matter which organization they belonged to or who received the recognition. What mattered to him was serving Veterans, honoring their sacrifices, and ensuring they were never forgotten.

C.T. served our nation as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism. His service continued long after he returned home. He was inducted into the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame in 2019 and served as president of the Veterans Tribute Group.

Among his many lasting contributions, C.T. was one of the original Veterans who envisioned and worked tirelessly to raise the donations necessary to build the replica Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Elizabethtown. That memorial stands today as part of his enduring legacy and as a place of remembrance, healing, and education for generations to come.

To me, C.T. was more than a fellow Veteran and Post member. He was a great friend, a remarkable person, and an example of what lifelong service truly means. I know many throughout our community feel the same way. His friendship, compassion, and tireless commitment to others touched more lives than any announcement could ever capture.

On behalf of Cameron Ponder VFW Post 12237, we offer C.T. a final, solemn salute. We extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow Veterans, and everyone whose life was touched by this extraordinary man.

Rest easy, C.T. Your mission is complete, but your legacy will endure.

Funeral and memorial service arrangements have not yet been announced. We will share that information here as soon as it becomes available.
