Yesterday, Prevention Specialists Sonji Holsclaw and Rachel Blevins attended Grayson County’s Road to Summer Safety event hosted by the Grayson County Health Department. ☀️

The community event brought together organizations and resources focused on helping families stay safe and informed throughout the summer months. We’re always grateful for opportunities to connect with community members, share resources, and support prevention and safety education across our region!

📣🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Evelyn Schnee 🌟📣

Today, we’re honored to spotlight Evelyn Schnee, who has volunteered with Silverleaf since 2022.

Volunteers like Evelyn help create the welcoming, compassionate environment that is so important to the work we do. Her thoughtful perspective on healing, support, and community reflects the heart behind our mission.

Evelyn told us a bit about which aspects of Silverleaf's purpose she identifies with:
🗣️ "Providing a nurturing, safe place for people who have been traumatized... a place to rest and heal."

One thing she wishes people knew about volunteering with us:
🗣️ "That the staff and other volunteers are strong support group."

Evelyn also shared this surprising fact about herself:
🗣️ "I’ve hiked rim to rim of the Grand Canyon on three separate trips, staying at Phantom Ranch for a night or two before finishing the hike to the opposite rim."

As well as her favorite travel destination:
🗣️ "Yellowstone. Primarily because of the rivers and fly fishing, but also riding my bike in the park before it opened in the spring so it would be just me and the herds of bison on the roads. On more than one occasion, I was able to reach out on either side and touch a bison walking past."

Her favorite pasttime:
🗣️ "Reading."

And if Evelyn could have any superpower, she would choose:
🗣️ "To live free from fear."

We are deeply grateful for Evelyn’s time, compassion, and dedication to supporting survivors and our community. Volunteers like her help make Silverleaf a place of care, safety, and healing for so many people.

Have you ever felt exhausted trying to keep all the balloons in life afloat—making sure nothing gets dropped?

Last week, our staff participated in training focused on Secondary Trauma & Self-Care. One activity reminded us of an important truth: we are not designed, nor capable, of keeping everything in the air all the time. When we try, eventually something falls… and sometimes you even get hit by it on the way down. (Sorry, Kelly McCormack! 😅🎈)

In helping professions especially, it can feel natural to carry more, push harder, and keep juggling responsibilities without pause. But caring for ourselves is not separate from the work—it is part of the work.

Trauma can affect far more than emotions—it can impact memory, reactions, communication, stress responses, and a person’s sense of safety.

Our Trauma & the Brain Training Program helps participants better understand how trauma affects the brain and why trauma-informed responses matter. This training is designed for educators, healthcare professionals, faith communities, community organizations, and anyone working closely with people who may have experienced trauma.

Understanding the effects of trauma helps us respond with greater empathy, patience, and care.

Grooming behaviors are often subtle and can develop gradually over time, which is why awareness and education are so important.

Recognizing boundary-crossing behaviors early helps adults create safer environments for children and respond when something feels concerning. Prevention starts with paying attention, trusting instincts, and being willing to have these conversations.

Thank you to Darkness to Light for sharing resources that help communities better understand and recognize grooming behaviors.

This summer, we're starting conversations that matter. 💬 Today kicks off our Summer Safety Series: Conversation Starters—designed to help families build open communication, strengthen trust, and create meaningful conversations about personal safety.

This week's question to ask your child:
👉 "Who are three adults you could go to if you needed help?"

It sounds simple, but you might be surprised by the conversation it opens up. Some children can name three trusted adults right away. Others need a little help thinking it through. Both are completely okay.

Use this as an opportunity to talk about the safe adults already in your child's life—at home, at school, in your community—and to make sure they know they always have somewhere to turn.

More conversation starters coming all summer long. Save this one and use it tonight at dinner, on a car ride, or whenever the moment feels right.

Prevention Specialists Sonji Holsclaw and Rachel Blevins are set up at North Middle School's Reality Store today!

The Reality Store is a hands-on simulation that gives students the opportunity to explore career paths while making real-world budgeting and lifestyle decisions.
