"We've got brain cancer surrounded." Our brother, Kory Hunter, passed away peacefully on May 18th after a 22 month battle with brain cancer. He was 43 years old.

The essence of Kory was selfless giving. He volunteered every chance he could. He felt a strong need to give back to the community and to help others less fortunate. He helped build homes in Mexico, volunteered at his local church in feeding the homeless, and served on the PTA Board at the local elementary school. In 2013, even during treatment, he served as a representative to the local school foundation, and helped set up camp and raise funds for children with medical needs. And finally, when his health precluded him from continuing at work, Kory called his church to see what volunteer work he could do from home. Kory never complained about his illness and continued to keep a selfless attitude, always caring about the well being of others. His largest frustration was losing his independence, and his biggest regret was saying goodbye to his adoring wife and three young children. Kory is survived by his spouse, Rory, his children, Ethan, Dylan and Kailey, his parents, Jim and Joanne Hunter, his mother and father-in-law, Judy and Mike Morrison, his sister and brother-in-law, Mandy and Heath Gregory, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Riley and Kelli Morrison. The 8 circles in the UKF logo symbolize his children, nephews and niece who consumed such a large part of his heart. Through the Uncle Kory Foundation, we are able to keep the spirit of Uncle Kory alive - helping patients and families affected by all forms of cancer, but particularly brain cancer.

Today is World Mental Health Day — a reminder that mental health is an important part of overall health, especially for those facing brain cancer.

A brain cancer diagnosis can bring uncertainty, fear, changes in daily life, and emotional challenges that extend far beyond treatment itself.

Patients may experience anxiety, depression, or emotional distress. Caregivers and family members can also face significant stress as they navigate a diagnosis alongside their loved one.

Supporting the brain means supporting the whole person including their mental and emotional well-being.

Today, we’re recognizing the patients, caregivers, and families facing these challenges, and encouraging more conversations around mental health and brain cancer.

Our Founders and Executive Director recently had the opportunity to visit City of Hope, connect with researchers who are pushing brain cancer research forward, and tour their incredible facilities and labs.

During our visit, we met with UKF Seed Grant recipients Darya Alizadeh, PhD, Yuanyuan Yang, MD, and Qi Cui, PhD, to learn more about their work and see firsthand the research being made possible through funding from the Uncle Kory Foundation.

There is something especially meaningful about stepping inside the labs, meeting the researchers behind the science, and seeing where the work we are so proud to support is happening every day.

We are grateful for the researchers who continue to ask important questions, pursue new discoveries, and work toward better treatments and outcomes for patients and families facing brain cancer.

CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH NEEDS MORE INVESTMENT. SO WE’RE HELPING FUND IT. 🔬

At our Fight Like the Averys Comedy Night, our community came together to raise $80,000, and our $15,000 matching gift was fully met.

Those dollars are helping move pediatric brain cancer research forward through the F.L.A.G. Grant, providing critical funding for researchers working toward better treatments and better outcomes for children facing brain cancer.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month may be coming to an end, but the need for research doesn’t.

One night. One incredible community. More research ahead.

Progress in childhood cancer depends on researchers asking new questions, pursuing new approaches, and having the funding needed to move promising ideas forward.
