Who was Kate Moore Brown?

Kate Moore Brown was an influential educator, arts advocate, and civic leader in El Paso. She was among the first graduates of El Paso High School and became the first music teacher in the El Paso Schools in the 1890s, reportedly riding a bicycle to work. citeturn1fetch_file0
She played an important role in the city’s cultural development by helping organize the El Paso Symphony Association, where she later served as president, and by helping found the El Paso International Art Museum. Her public service extended beyond the arts: she served on the state board of welfare in 1923, was president of the El Paso Women’s Club, and served on the El Paso School Board in the 1920s, where she opposed the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1932, Josephine Glasgow, a friend of Kate Moore Brown, invited the El Paso Pioneer Women Association to the Magoffin Home, where Brown was serving as president. During the visit, Brown played the 1880s piano still displayed in the formal room, and the women dined at the same table where Brown had once eaten her wedding breakfast. Mrs. Glasgow also presented letters written by James Willey Magoffin
