Many people first heard about Days for Girls through the Giving Machines. But did you know there’s an incredible volunteer team right here in Las Cruces?
What started as a conversation on a cruise has grown into a group of women who meet each week, volunteering their time to sew reusable menstrual kits that have reached women and girls both locally and around the world.
Judy Davis and her husband were sharing stories about a service trip to Africa when a woman named Hannah, who directed a Days for Girls team in Vancouver, BC, told Judy she had to learn about the organization.
Inspired, Judy went home, researched how to start a team, recruited a few neighbors, and began sewing menstrual kits from her home in 2018. Today, that small group has grown into a dedicated volunteer team that meets regularly in Las Cruces.
Their mission goes far beyond sewing. Before every kit is given away, they teach girls about menstrual health, hygiene, and their changing bodies. They’ve supported women and girls through mission trips, humanitarian efforts, and even asylum seekers here along our own border.
One story Judy shared stayed with me. After receiving a kit, one woman began to cry. Through an interpreter she explained they weren’t tears of sadness, they were tears of gratitude.
