Each summer, our Shorebird Monitors play a vital role in protecting Duxbury Beach’s threatened nesting shorebirds. Throughout the day, they track and collect data on the movements of chicks and adult birds, implement state-required protection measures, and help ensure the safety of nesting areas. Their dedicated monitoring not only supports conservation efforts but also enables us to provide as much recreational beach access as possible while gaining valuable insights into shorebird behavior to guide future management decisions.

🐦📡 Four Willets nesting on Duxbury Beach are helping advance shorebird conservation research!
On May 29, DBR staff partnered with Mass Audubon and UMass Amherst researchers to attach satellite tags to four Willets. The data collected will help scientists better understand migration routes, habitat use, and how we can protect shorebirds for generations to come.

By studying a stable species like the Willet, researchers hope to uncover important clues that may help conserve declining species like the Whimbrel.
Stay tuned as we follow their journeys! 🌊

The powerful nor’easter that swept through Duxbury Beach on May 30 left a significant impact on both the beach and its wildlife.

Strong winds and storm surge pushed water high onto the beach, reaching the base of the dunes in some areas. As a result, 14 Piping Plover nests were overwashed and lost, and one recently hatched brood is presumed lost due to exposure.

The storm also damaged approximately half a mile of nesting species fencing. Thanks to the dedication of our field staff, repairs were completed over the following days to help ensure continued protection for nesting shorebirds.

These storms are a reminder of the challenges coastal wildlife face and the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect these vulnerable species. 🐤

After an especially brutal winter of storms, wind, and flooding, work has been underway across Duxbury Beach to help protect and preserve this fragile barrier beach. Throughout the winter and early spring, our team coordinated critical restoration and resiliency projects including dune restoration, sand fencing, planting efforts, and erosion mitigation. 🪏

As we head into Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of summer, these behind-the-scenes efforts are what help keep Duxbury Beach accessible, resilient, and protected for both wildlife and future generations. We can’t wait to welcome you back to the beach for the 2026 season! 🌊
