7 years ago the Wicked Good Cause Org. team recognized that many of our recipients were children enduring cancer. We learned of the many ways that childhood cancer affected the entire family. The impact that the pink campaign has made for breast cancer is revolutionary, and has been widely successful. We wondered why the gold campaign that takes place every September wasn’t as widespread. Likely no one wants to think about children who are sick. In truth it’s hard to get your heart or head around. Ignoring childhood cancer hasn’t made it go away though. As hard as it is to imagine, there are children in hospitals every day hearing the life changing news that they have cancer. In fact, although it’s considered rare, our team and volunteers across the South Shore of MA. have known far too many children who have had to suffer the awful symptoms, and painful treatments that accompany this horrific disease. We have also known too many children that are no longer with us because of cancer. We remember them this month and always.
In 2015 we launched our own and only cause-based campaign. “Go Wicked Gold”. Since then, we see a lot more gold each September, even extending to professional athletes. It seems like all the hard work from all the passionate people across the world have made an impact. We are so thankful for that, for all the people doing their part to spread awareness, to fundraise, to run or ride, or simply to ”light it up for childhood cancer awareness”. Many have reached out asking about gold gear, and luminary bags.
We haven’t produced apparel or luminary bags in 3 years. We paused during 2020 to navigate the pandemic, and to offer relief to hardworking volunteers. We also wanted to be mindful in light of a global pandemic of the many corporate and private sponsors, including the small businesses that have so graciously supported our mission since 2013. Having said that, seeing all the gold at drop off at school today was truly uplifting. We received these adorable pictures of some good kids doing their part. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing kids show up for kids. Great job everyone! ❤️🎗

The third annual Duxbury Fitness 5k is on June 5th, and once again, WGC is excited to be their charity of choice! It has been a while since we've had an event and we are looking forward to fundraising and getting back to helping people in our community.

We have decided to dedicate this race to an incredibly deserving family that has endured so much over the last few years. This race will raise funds, and more importantly show support, to Paula Cooney, a Duxbury mom, wife, and friend to many. We asked her husband Matt to share some insight as to what Paula has been enduring over the last few years and he share this:

Anyone who knows Paula Cooney loves her: she's the embodiment of empathy, a dedicated employee, passionate volunteer, fiercely loyal friend, and loving mom and wife. She put herself through college by joining the National Guard and served for 20 years, taught young adults with special needs, taught herself graphic design and turned this skillset into a career, and, if you ask her, would list her devotion to family and the beautiful home she's helped build as her greatest achievements. Whatever she pursues she does so fully and with total focus, strength, and dedication.

On March 1, 2019, Paula received the devastating news that she has stage 3 multiple myeloma, a terminal cancer of the blood. While there is no cure for myeloma, there are treatments that attempt to delay its advance and Paula is fighting it with everything she's got. One of the strongest sources of inspiration during her struggle has been the love and support of her family, friends, and colleagues, and on Sunday, June 5th, we run or walk to celebrate her resilience and spirit and cheer her on during this grueling fight. She, her husband Matt, and daughter Autumn thank you for your kindness and support and hope to share updates well into the future.

Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity.

All our love,
Matt

All of us at Wicked Good Cause Org. are pulling for Paula and praying for strength for their family. We would love to have join us in rallying together in a show of unity and support for the Cooney family. There is something very powerful about a community coming together to energize and support someone enduring something so horrific. If you can't join, please consider making a donation. Links below.

Wicked Good Cause .org, based in Duxbury, is a local organization whose mission is to provide philanthropic support to local South Shore Massachusetts families that have been affected by unforeseen illness, accident, or tragedy. Since 2013, they have been able to support several local residents in their time of need and have donated approximately $300,000 to date. During our senate budget debate, I was able to secure them an additional $10,000 in funding that they’ll be able to use to help even more families in need. Thank you for all the work you do!

Here is a little clip of the work Wicked Good Cause Org. has done over the last 8 years. We have raised over 1 million dollars, helped over 35 individual families, gathered over 300 volunteers, spanned over 34 towns and 8 states, and donated to 5 different hospitals for research. If you find yourself in the position to donate, we will be sure to put your dollars into making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Thank you to everyone who had helped us achieve these goals. Cheers to our donors, thanks to our volunteers, and continued prayers for our recipients! Happy holidays to all of you!

An important announcement from Wicked Good Cause Org. We have been on pause for some time as we, along with the entire world, navigated unprecedented times due to Covid-19. As an organization that relied almost entirely on event-based fundraising,, and with a mandatory quarantine in place, things looked grim. We grappled with the decision to hold tight, or to prepare a permanent exit plan. We decided to move forward with donating funds to recipients that had been nominated up until the shut down. Helping deserving people facing unimaginable circumstances is always what has driven this organization, and it felt great to be “back at it”. We also donated the funds from our "Go Wicked Gold" campaign that takes place each September. Donations were made to local two families with children enduring cancer, and an additional 25K was gifted to The Children’s Brain Tumor Project at Weill Cornell Pediatric Brain and Spine Center.

After these funds were dispersed, a reality hit us. Local families will still need our help. People will still confront unthinkable circumstances, and the need for support will remain. Our mission is to help those affected by unforeseen accident, illness, or tragedy. We realized that we didn’t need to shut our doors, we needed to kick them open, and get to work restructuring, and diversifying our fundraising efforts. Wicked Good Cause Org. was built by many people who lent their time, efforts, and positive energy, into giving back and to helping others. I am happy to announce that the hard work of so many will continue to benefit those most in need.

We are working on a few different campaigns, and can't wait to share them with you. We also have some great volunteer opportunities coming up for adults and high schoolers. If you are interested, please reach out @ [email protected]. We are currently revamping our website too, stay tuned!

Wow, it’s been quite the year! We are excited to announce the final numbers and distributions from last September’s “Go Wicked Gold” campaign. Each year our only cause-based campaign raises funds and awareness to support local children, and donates a portion to research teams persisting in the efforts to cure childhood cancer. It has been a challenging time to fundraise for many charities, but our dedicated volunteers, officers, and generous supporters, donors, and corporate sponsors made it possible to raise 50,000 dollars from our September campaign. We donated to two local children; 8 year old Caiya from Hanover, and 11 year old Cody of Braintree. Both of these beautiful children are enduring Leukemia. On behalf of everyone at Wicked Good Cause Org we are sending love and prayers to these two warriors.
Additionally, we proudly donated $25,000 to Dr. Mark Souweidane of Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center for the Children’s Brain Tumor project. Dr. Souweidane is a pediatric neurosurgeon who has relentlessly dedicated the past 10 years to finding a cure for DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma). DIPG is an incurable brain cancer that primarily affects children. Wicked Good Cause Org was inspired by a beautiful little girl from Norwell, Calle Cronk, who was diagnosed with DIPG in 2013. Just over a year ago we learned that Linley Menard, of Easton, had been diagnosed with DIPG. Linley’s parents were guests at our very first Winter Ball. Although the Menards graciously declined assistance from Wicked Good Cause, we still consider Linley and her family members of the WGC community. In honor of Linley Menard, and the beautiful legacy she left, we make this donation in great hopes of finding a cure for DIPG.Thank you to the Carver, Duxbury, and Plymouth Gold teams, as well as all of the kind-hearted and dedicated supporters of this important mission.
