Over the past three years, I have been working towards my Eagle Project; construction of a picnic shelter on Train Field. I chose Train Field both for its central location in town, and its value to students, athletes, and community members. As a lifelong member of this town, I have grown up on Train Field with the DEF run on the fourth of July, Duxbury’s youth sports programs, Alden recess, Middle
School pickup games with friends, and watching my brother’s High School soccer games and graduation. Train Field was a meeting place for my friends and I to play backyard football, soccer, or baseball. This shelter will provide a safe and enjoyable place to meet, spectate, or relax. This shelter can be used comfortably in Summer, Spring, and Fall. A picnic shelter placed on Train Field would act as a central location for events and activities hosted outside of the athletic and educational departments. With this structure, more small scale events such as birthday parties, touch football games, or an outdoor family or neighborhood picnic could be planned and enjoyed. Players will be able to use the field to meet before games and practices. The shelter could be used to host team dinners, celebrations, or informational meetings for coaches, camp counselors and teachers who utilize Train Field. Even simply having a dry place to be during a water break, while waiting for substitutions, or before and after practice would greatly benefit the players enjoyment of the field. Working with town officials I have made modifications to the original plans to meet with the necessary criteria of the Town of Duxbury, including a brick walkway, ADA constructed picnic tables, a concrete pad for ease of field maintenance and to tie in with the newly added dugouts. Finally, I adjusted my plans from a previous shingled roof to a metal one. This will only slightly increase initial costs, but greatly increase longevity of the structure while also matching the look of other structures on the field. The project was unanimously approved May 6, 2019 by the Board of Selectmen in Duxbury as a gift to the town.
